Hoover model 300 fan blade issues

I posted here a while back about help with brushrolls and I received some great advice which absolutely helped me in my restoration process so far. I'm hoping you guys can help me with another issue.

I've been restoring this hoover model 300 for the past year or so now. However now that im close to finishing , Im realizing that I may have made a rookie mistake when I bought it.

One of the fan blades on the motor has a decent size chunk missing from it. see attached picture.

I have just turned it on and the motor is extremely loud.

The only other thing i can think of that could cause it is thd fact that i had just replaced the carbon brushes. The motor was only buzzing before.

Now, when I start it up it becomes louder and louder almost to the sound of an actual lawn mower. I have to shut it off pretty fast; less then 5 seconds after. I start the power. I don't want to burn the motor off or destroy the vacuum in any way.

Is there any way I can fix the blades; or do I need to replace it with another motor or blade? Is that even the issue on why it's so loud?

There is an ad on Craigslist for another hoover model 300 one but I really don't want to spend $100 for another full model and travel a 7 hour round trip to pick it up. However I will if it is necessary.

What do you think would be the best option? I've spent a lot of time fixing this guy up and really would like to get it up and running. Any help would be appreciated.

Could be bearings, could be brushroll, but the main factor is for sure that fan. If you break off the blade opposite it and file them both equally, it will dampen the vibration. This is not a good solution but its a good temporary fix. You need a fan first and foremost and there is not really any viable way to fix a cast fan breakage. You'd spend more time welding, grinding, and balancing than it would be to just buy another 300 and ship it/pick it up. Maybe someone here has a spare fan for one?

I'll go ahead and post a wanted ad in the market place here.

I just to make sure though, It wouldn't have something to do with the new carbon brushes causing the motor for some reason to go faster then it should?

The old ones were worn down so I bought two at ace hardware that were close to the same height and width as to the old ones. The only big difference was that the new ones had a braided wire running from the carbon through the spring to a brass cap.

I'm assuming it's not going to be a big difference but I can't be sure as this is the first time I've replaced carbon brushes and it's quite new to me.

I was also using the measurements that were posted for a hoover model 700 for the length. Thread Number: 37179.

I haven't tested the brushroll yet, as I didn't want to damage it when testing the motor for the first time. But I followed the advice you guys gave me last time, put it all back together and the old one is spinning freely in its housing now.

All new carbon brushes will need to bed-in and shape to the commutator which will take a few runnings for that to happen. It might seem to be going faster maybe because it is getting the power it should now and not dragging down with a low voltage.

I'm assuming though that I should wait till I have a new blade in there to run it so that the off balance fan doesnt wear the bearings?
Do you know for how long I should run it the first few times? I guess im a bit worried that if I run it for too long in this state it can burn the motor out.

Yes do not run it with the broken fan, you risk damaging the armature and stator coil. It will also sound horrible. I have a Kirby 1CR that I think has a broken fan and the whole vacuum vibrates and sounds like it's gonna explode.

Did you check for the broken piece anywhere inside the bag or suction path? If you had the piece and could JB-weld it back on, it wouldnt be perfect but it would make it a little less off- balance. not sure if the jb weld would hold with that amount of velocity but i think it would.
