Hi all!
I’m a new member though I’ve been lurking for a while because I’ve been fascinated with the Electrolux Model LX. I always geek out on cool vintage things.
Today, however, I found a Hoover Model 29 at our local ReStore. All in its original box looking like it has never been unpacked. The dust bag is still in the paper wrapper which is the only thing I took a picture of. The tools are still in the cardboard caddy. The upright handle is in a separate long box. This long box looks worse for wear but the handle looks untouched.
I didn’t buy it but am wondering if I should have. Any thoughts?

Bradley!

Was that you I heard all the way here in PA?

Normally,(define normal) we (well most) don't abuse other members. BUT, we're glad, now, that you've 'seen the light'. That's a rare find.
I'm obsessed with the history of these things....... where it came from... why it sat dormant... what has brought it to Restore. Again, a great save/find.
Enjoy!

Glorious pictures!

Thank you. I heard the shouts from all over! Glad I got it though I may want to part with it. I’m gonna give it a chance to convince me it should stay for awhile.
My generous side says to leave something unique that I don’t need so that someone else can have the joy of discovery and finding a real gem. My realistic side knows that if the right person doesn’t come into this store to see it while it is available, it may end up in the dumpster. That would be a crime. I’ll gladly be it’s caretaker for a while!
It is definitely unused! Glory be!! The filter bag is still in its paper shipping bag which is still sealed. I’ll leave it that way even though I would love to read the instruction manual which is also in there. If I do part with it, I want the new owner to have the thrill of breaking that seal. Here are some pics:

Buy buy buy!!!! If my Restore sold stuff like that I'd break the walls apart! Fantastic find!

These were not cheap back then, whoever bought it must have been very wealthy or something terrible happened.

And yes my Restore has a big problem with putting more stuff in the dumpster than in the store. Then what does make it out has ridiculous prices and nobody buys it anyway.

Whew!

That was close! I'm glad you went back. There are a lot of Hoover collectors here and I know you'll be given some solid advise from members here in the next few weeks with whatever you decide to do, keep it or sell it.It would be interesting to hear any history on this machine. I wonder if the person who took this in at Restore has any info from the donner?Congrats on a truly rare find.

If you do decide to sell now or later, I hope you will let the members here know first, lol, just saying!

Awesome find!! It's really amazing how this stayed unused, unassembled since new. Maybe someone bought Mom a new Hoover and Mom wanted to save it until her old one wore out...which never happened!

It is interesting to see the black cord, as my 29 from Evan Rogers has a black Hoover cord which I always assumed was a replacement for the original red cord. Obviously at some point in the run these came new with a black cord. What is the black section on the handle tube? Protective wrapping?

Also I am surprised to see the hose and tools in brown.

The 29, because of the color and the taller handle, is my favorite of the 62-63-64-634 series of machines that all used this body design. It's also one of the less common ones as it was the "budget" model to the more deluxe 62.

You done good!!!

Owen

Owen,
The black on the handle appears to be black paper. I first thought it was a rubberized material. Here are some close up pics. It’s strange that the cord brackets are mounted on top of the paper.
And the plug has a slot for fastening to the cord.
I read somewhere in the last 24 hours that this was sold with brown tools at first because a previous model had brown accessories. Makes sense to me to clear out old stock. If true that would indicate it is an early version.
And that it survived untouched all these years! That’s finally why I went back to buy it. I didn’t want someone who didn’t care to haphazardly start taking apart the packaging to see what all was in the box. Was it a gift that never got used! Did the recipient die unexpectedly then have it languish in a closet for 70 years? Or was it old stock that was forgotten in a retail storeroom somewhere? Restore was too busy when I was there so I didn’t want to be a pest by asking if anyone knew the story behind the vacuum.

Hoover Mo 29

The chance of finding this, the quality, condition, newness and possible $value$ leaves me stunned and near speechless!!I am also confused by the black paper on handle that seems to be temporary packing but has the 'more than 9,000,000' sticker on it.
One of the few 29s I have known was in a shoe store after years of service.
As to why it remains new I once saw small new kitchen appliances from the 30s that were said to be duplicate wedding presents that were never needed.Have also heard of new appliances bought for larger house that was never built.I have also read a Sonny & Cher interview from years ago mentioning that when they had money in the early days to buy something they would get 2 and put 1 in the attic in case the music thing didn't work out.
