Well a lot of American uprights seem to be very industrial, chunky, heavy designs...regardless of how old they are.

They're domestic appliances, not an industrial process. :P

Hey Pete,

They used a circular solid scented block to dispense the fragrance, ISTR three different kinds were available.

They always remind me of lavatory freshner blocks a bit... *ducks*

Hoover Air Fresheners

Circular, soft plastic disc, with a hole on the centre. (These discs reminded me of the replacement discs for the 'Airwick Ball' airfreshener that Granny had in her bathroom, circa late 1970's!).

Initially Hoover had three fragrances:

1. Green disc: 'Orchard Blossom'; smelled of green apples.
2. Blue disc: 'Spring Bouquet'; quite a strong floral fragrance.
3. Brick-red disc: 'Tobacco Clear'; strong smelling chemical smell, to counteract smell of stale tobacco.

A fourth version was later added, replacing the 'Tobacco Clear'. This was a yellow disc, and called 'Summer Meadow'; smelling of summer flowers.
