Hoover Dial-A-Matic U6003

I found this on Sunday at a thrift store for $9.98. Works great, just cleaning it up and repainting it. Someone had apparently painted the base of the cleaner at one point, and did a terrible job, so I standed it down and have my 7th coat of paint on it. The color I found is nearly identical to the original color of the machine. It will turn out very nice once it's all done.

Wow! I am loving the Eureka self-propelled in the back I have the same machine but the bag is different.. It's the same design but the material is not as porous and the material is not as shiny and/or glittery if that makes sense..

I have a question for our friend in Omaha - did the Hoover DAMs have a reputation for ripping up carpeting as they stood in tool-mode? It always amazes me that these vacuums were approved as safe to sell, knowing that the rotating brushes were still whirling around while the unit was being used in attachment mode. Our old Eureka from the early 60's had a Bottom Plate that was used to cover the spinning brushes to protect carpets, floors, hands and feet while concentrating the suction into the hose. Why didn't Hoover do the same thing? I can imagine someone getting their fingertips damaged while grabbing onto the DAM base when moving it up or down a flight of stairs!

Hey Brian:

When the DAM was in the upright position the brushes were lifted off the floor so they didnt touch the floor or carpet. They also had a built in carrying handle on the front so you never touched the base to carry it.

I don't think the brushes really dig the carpet that much when the handle is in it's upright position. I don't have a hose or anything for it, so I probably won't find out. I just always use caution when cleaning with uprights that don't allow you to disengage the brushroll when cleaning with the hose. I just finished painting the base of the cleaner, it was really bad, so now it looks very good again. I'll post some pictures tonight when I get home.

Hey Andrew did you repaint that Eureka? If so what did you use.. Mine could use the spa treatment and repainting on the base..

Yes, I too have the U6039, and the U6039-030, as well as the U6003 (early and late versions). Of the Power-Drive DAM's, I must say the U6039 is my favorite. I recall seeing one years ago on "Family Matters" where Carl is trying to fix it as it spews dust into the air (wish I could find it on YouTube). Can someone tell me why some had the -030 suffix after the model number? Also, was the U6039 sold at the same time as the U6003 as an upgrade?
