Hoover Convertibles

I was looking at some of the old Convertibles on here and think they look great. I especially like the metal based ones, with the curved hood with a light and also the ones with the squarer hood and no light. My favorites are the lime green such as the 1030, 1020, etc. Also some of the ones with the round orange hood.

I was wondering how these perform and how loud they are. And comparing the plastic to the metal base models. I am guessing they would sound about like my Eureka 1934A. How well do the C bags work? For some reason I prefer the smaller outer bags to the bigger later ones that took the A bag. I know the A bag would work much better, but are the C bags terrible?

Convertibles Are Fantastic!

Depending on what type of carpet you have, a Convertible will clean either just as well or better than your Eureka. You will not be disappointed. The noise and sound depends on which period the machine was built in. The later 5amp models and 6amp Guardsmen are a bit loud; nothing compared to a Concept or Elite but a tad noisy. Hoovers have a low grumble noise, while Eurekas have a higher-pitched whine to their motors.


 


It is a very hard decision to choose a bag set-up. The C bags are single-ply, leak dust when you replace them, and clog easily. You can get a newer A-bag model, but then you get a cheaper plastic base and often duller aesthetics. The C bags are not terrible, but get annoying with regular use. If you want to use a Convertible daily, get one that uses A bags. Otherwise, the metal-base models up until the late 70s are the way to go for collectors. But choose what you want, that is what is most important. 


 


One thing that does bother me with C bags is that they look almost the same inflated then when the machine is off. There is no ballooning effect like on a Kirby or the A-bag models. I know that doesn't matter to everybody, but it is something to take note of. 


 


Either way, you will love any Convertible you get. They really show why Hoover was #1.

I just got a ( A ) bag complete assembly, bellows and fill nozzle and outer bag and swapped it out for the ( C ) bag assembly on my earlier convertibles that I use everyday. So now I can use my earlier models with modern conveniance of the A bag.

Not loud at all but very smooth sounding for the metal base Convertibles. Getting to the plastic base is when you might see a 4.8Amp which is when they get louder but still sound cool!! Here's a nice Convertible youtube video to give you an idea of noise.

Here's a link to a Hoover Heavy Duty Convertible which I believe is a 5.0 Amp motor. The tone and sound are quite similar to a Hoover Convertible with 4.8 Amp or Hoover Decade 80/ 800 style with 6.0 and 6.5 Amp motors.
