Hoover Convertible U4127?

A few weeks ago, I purchased an excellent condition Hoover Convertible model U4127 on a local Craigslist. Does anyone have information about this model? I've heard it was the first plastic base unit from around 1978/1979...? I am unsure of the validity of that information.

You are correct. That model along with the U4119 (I believe) were the first plastic convertibles and were introduced in the late '70s.

You are indeed correct on your information. This model is the firs plastic base model to be introduced in the late 70’s. I’m not sure the official color names, but it’s a white base and white bag with a grass green hood, trim, and handle grip. It’s a non-headlight model. It’s subsequently my favorite model Convertible as well! I have several running examples of this machine, along with many parts for them as wel! There’s one currently for sale on eBay, however it’s been there for quite some time, and with the seller’s lofty asking price, I imagine it will stay for sale for a long time to come! Here’s one of my U4127’s along with my lavender model 33! Somewhere, I have a copy of the owner’s manual and an advertising flyer for it. I’ll try to dig them out and send you a copy when I find them!

Debate over which model was the first plastic based, and when. Some would say that the 4119 and U4127 were not the first, because the Sea Blue Estate was reissued as the Convertible Elite Mode U4103, and was reissued as a plastic based model. As well as the Mint Green Model U4101. Both of those were originally released in 1977, and supposedly were changed to plastic in 1978. But yet I was told Years and years ago that the U4119 and U4127 was not released until 1979, and that Hoover was not plastic until 1979. My mother got a brand new U4119 as a wedding gift in 1979, she got married in June of '79, so that means that they could have been plastic the last part of 1978 for all we know. No one has really been able to settle on this subject.

If I'm not mistaken, the plastic-based U4103 was made primarily in the early '80s. I did see a video of a (supposedly) 1977 Convertible Estate U4103, which had a metal base.

The 4127 was my very first vacuum that I purchased as a "grown up". I was living in New York City then. I had seen the vacuum in the window of a hardware/general merchandise store on W 72nd Street for awhile, and really liked the look of it. I had just moved into a new apartment, bought new carpeting (not wall to wall, but about 12x16 with the edges bound, so the hardwood would show) and decided to get a new Hoover to go with it! It was in September of 1980. Bought the full deluxe attachments too, and took it all home in a cab. I kept it for many years, until I bought a Kirby G4. Wish I had kept it for my collection!
