Hoover Convertible Leak

I have a Hoover Convertible that I recently got off Ebay. It's in very good shape, except it's leaking dust at the point where the bag assembly actually connects to the machine. It looks like someone put a bead of silicone around the throat of the bag assembly to seal it. Should there be a gasket there? If so, are those available? Or should I just try more silicone? Thanks!

Hmm, what Convertible?

Hoover DID use a bead of what looks like hot glue on all the plastic Covertibles. All of the genuine Hoover plastic bag rings are like that. The cast metal bag rings on older Convertibles have a rubber gasket.

New Plastic Model

Brett, it's a newer plastic model -- just as you described. It does look like it could be hot glue -- or a silicone material. I think I'll take it off again and try to make sure the area is clean and then reattach to see if that works. The cleaner is in very good condition. It just leaks some.

Sorry to say, but many, maybe most Convertibles with that style bag ring don't seal perfectly. Even when new.

You can try heating the seal with a blow dryer then seating the ring while still warm. Make sure that the teeth on the bottom of the bag ring are fully inserted into the metal plate and that the slide clamp is fully engaging the upper tab.

Even if you take care to make sure the bag ring is squarely seated, you may still get some leakage. The only way to assure no leakage is to scrape off the factory seal and apply your own.

I remember it came from someone in SAT. It's a newer blue convertible with a plastic base. Was that you? If it is, you did a super job packing it. Thanks! I've never owned a convertible before and wanted to see what they are like. Good lightweight machine. LOL! I don't own a hair dryer! If you saw my hair you'd understand why! I'll tinker with it. It's not leaking a lot of dust, so what you've said makes me think the amount I'm seeing is normal leakage. It's not as if Hoover designed it for HEPA filtration!
