installed new carbons on the 706 i'm giving to a friend, and tested it and the top of the hood was very hot to the touch. i vacuumed a comparable sized room with a convertible from my collection and determined this was not normal. i ordered a new upper bearing from vac parts plus. im hoping this will solve the issue. this was after i oiled the top bearing.. i think the fact it was greased before i got to it ruined it, even spite my cleaning it. any of the other resident convertible gurus here say i took the right recourse?

when hoover says do not lubricate they mean do no lubrication....people over saturate the felt donut in the plate or even worse grease the top armiture shaft ...the plate goes bad because the sleeve bearing is worn or mishappened from wear or from running the belt in the opposite direction.....you should have told me you needed a plate i would have sent you one.....if you change the upper motor bearing run the machine with the belt disconected and the hood of for 5 minutes ....let the new carbons andbearing plate seat themselves.....i hope you got your carbons i mailed you ......john

John I did get the carbons, they work fine. I didn't know I needed a new uper bearing plate until I tesed it in detail whn breaking in the new carbons. I sprayed out the bearing wit brake cleaner, and re lubed it with 3in1 and it didn't hold the oil. I didn't realize the upper bearing was shot until I put my hand on the hood and it was very hot to the touch.
