Last time I was at my local vacuum store fairly recently, they had one of those Royals that was NOS on display. I think it's still there today, not certain though. But I'm sure you'd rather spend less on a used one anyways.

They had completely different motors.

Maytag never made vacuum motors. They are both Chinese made motors from different vendors but for my money, unless someone can show me actual performance data that shows the motor from the Maytag branded version is clearly better ( higher suction and airflow) which this video does not show, All the video has are touchy feely subjective impressions with no data to back anything he says.

I would go with the Ametek motor used in the Tempo. That is one of Ametek's modern Advantek "Air Watt Series" motors. Great product. Having the brushes right above the fan where they run cooler is better for their and the commutator's longevity. And Ametek makes a better all around motor IMHO, even the ones they make in Shanghai. If you know the model number of the motor you can look up its "Product Bulletin" which shows a performance chart and line diagram with dimensions. You may even be able to find a same size motor from Ametek with even greater suction and airflow by poking around their website. Ametek has since then introduced motors with the same basic architecture, brushes between the fan and the field but the brushes are longer and curved. These are called "Infinity Brushes". Poking around the Ametek website you might find a motor the same size with equal or better performance to what came in the Tempo that has Infinity Brushes. Modern Patriots now come with the same kind of Ametek motor ( minus the belt shaft ) that use Infinity Brushes. Good durable motors.

Honestly, performance wise both motors are pretty similar as I can't tell the difference. I also can't say which one actually lasted longer than the other. Normally the older the more reliable. But for the sound, I much prefer the older style motors. Has a much more pleasant tone in my opinion, the other one just sounds rather cheap. I had a blue Tempo 15 before which I've since given away, I would've still had it today if it had the older style motor. To my knowledge this is the only video on YouTube of a blue Tempo 15 with the older style motor but if there's more, I'd love to see them.

He gave the Panasonic more passes than he gave the Hoover.

The Powerdrive Windtunnel design dates back to 1998 or 1999, I believe, but this one dates back to July 2010 as indicated by the serial number.
