hoover 700 fan

Hi. 


 


I have a hoover 700 that runs perfectly except the fan rubs against the bottom at times.  When i try to connect the belt to the pulley the motor just humms and the fan dosen't spin at all.  I have tried to have a look as best i know how but i dont want to  risk damage to the motor. I wont ask here as no vac shop will even look at it anyway as it runs on 110v and won't work ouside my appartment without a voltage transformer.


 


I am tempted to ship the motor to my mom's house and get her to take it to her local vac shop so they can try to service it. Electrically the motor sounds great but the fan won't spin when belt is installed.


 


Any tips before i ship motor to mother??

NEVERMIND GUYS I WILL FIGURE SOMETHING OUT. TOO MANY TEENAGE COLLECTORS ON HERE.  93 VIEWS AND NO REPLIES. 


 


I THOUGHT SOMEONE WOULD KNOW SOMETHING OR KNOW SOMEONE WITH A REPAIR SHOP THAT I COULD SEND THE MOTOR TO.  MAYBE I SHOULD JUST SCRAP IT AND BUY ANOTHER WHEN I CAN FIND ONE THAT CAN BE SHIPPED.

Scrapping the motor and buying another might be your only choice. I have a motor repair shop close by my house though, so if you want, you could ship it to me and ill see what they can do. I doubt they could do anything though.

Sorry you feel this isn't an adequate resource for your question. I am not sure how many collectors out there have actually encountered this problem with a machine before, so that may partly be the reason that nobody has stepped up to help you.

I have a model 541 with the same problem. Everything runs just fine with no belt attached, but when the belt is attached -- it jams up and doens't run. I imagine it is a problem with the lower motor bearing.  I have not investigated the problem any further than disconnecting/reconnecting the belt, so I don't know for sure.  Being at work at the moment, I don't recall offhand if the 700 has a lower sleeve bearing, or a ball bearing.

You can download the Hoover service guide to give you a better idea at troubleshooting; the model 700 is covered.  But obviously with new parts not being available for a machine that's roughly 85 years old, you are likely going to need to find a donor/parts machine to get yours working again.

 I MESSAGED POCONOVACMAN TO SEEI IF HIS FRIEND CAN HELP.  HE POSTED A THREAD WHERE A BICENTENIAL CONVERTABLE WAS BEING REBUILT.  THE MAN WAS GREASING THE LOWER BEARING SO MAYBE JUST MAYBE HE MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO SOMETHING IF I CAN GET THE NAME AND NUMBER OF HIS SHOP.  THE GUY PLAINLY KNOWS HOW TO SERVICE VACS SO HE WOULD BE JUST WHAT I NEED.


 


 I WOULD LIKE TO POST THE MOTOR TO HIM SOMETIME IF I CAN'T FIND ANOTHER MOTOR.  MY 700 IS REALLY A NICE EXAMPLE MADE BETTER BY FELLOW VACLANDER PORTABLE SENDING ME A 700 BADGE. MANY THANKS FOR THAT JOHN.


 


 FOR NOW IT RUNS TIL A BELT GOES NEAR IT.  NO BEATS AS IT SWEEPS AS IT CLEANS FOR THIS 700.  AT LEAST FOR NOW.  IF YOU HAPPEN TO COME ACCROSS A MOTOR PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Does your machine run on 110 or 220?

i once

had this problem i got round it by turning the bearing round so the worn side was facing away from the brushroll what i mean is when refitting the brushroll and belt the tension of the belt is now pulling against the good side of the bearing i know this is not really a repair but it worked for me oh and just for the record i am 57 definately not a teenager i wish i was though ha

Mine came from california.  Runs on 110. I could take it to southern counties electrics here but i would just get the same answer.  "would not know how to repair that".  If i have to post the motor to the states i will  if i can't find another 700 motor.


 


 I do have a 220v model 700 but it was rebuilt at some point in it's life and has a different handle. Has a  rubber grip not the classic gun style grip that the original versions have.  Plus a square badge not the classic orange badge which is why i favour the original more as it looks just like the one in the manual. The original bag looks great with nice graphics.  It just required a bath in warm water and a bit of mild liquid soap to get rid of the funky smell it had.

i would not

get that bag wet if i were you it may look fine but at 80 odd years old its bound to be fragile in places i ruined one a fiew years ago in the same way i could kick myself for doing it if it smells just hang it up outside for a while that usually works for me

Bearing(s)

I have only just seen this thread (via the 'motor wanted' thread in the 'supermarket' forum.)

Anthony (Reply#6) has hit it on the head. You have a worn bearing (probably sleeve type) at the shaft end of the motor. If the front end-case of the motor is 'symmetrical', you can just undo the bolts and rotate it 180'. If not, you can try to rotate the bearing sleeve. Are you intending to subject this machine to regular use, or just the (very) occasional 'demo'??? A photograph of the motor (or two) would be useful....

Also NOT a teenager... ;-) . :'(

'HooverCelebrity' (Reply#3) also pointed out that it is probably a bearing issue (noticed upon re-reading the entire thread). I do 'proof-read' my posts before uploading, but I suppose "a photograph (or two) of the motor" would read better....

Not sure whether you can Email me, as I am not 'upgraded'... I know the messaging worked when I first joined, but that was on Robert's '40-day trial' (thanks, Robert ). Not intending to post my Email address in a public forum, so could be tricky.... I will check that my Email account is still working... I don't use Email more than a few times per year...

I would imagine that the bearing will be a 'standard' Imperial size. I wouldn't think that Hoover would have gone out of their way to produce 'awkward' parts... Not back then, anyway.... ;-) It will just need reaming to fit the shaft.....

P.S. How much use is it going to get?? If it's not going to see 'work', then you should be able to do a repair yourself....

HI AGAIN DAVE.


 


I JUST FOUND IN MY GARAGE AN OLD 725 MOTOR.  WOULD THE BOTTOM BEARING OR SLEEVE BEARING  BE COMPATABLE WITH THE 700?? MIGHT TRY TOMORROW IF THEY ARE.
