So a freak accident happened today with my Hoover 28. I was getting out Christmas gifts I had stored in my walk in closet to wrap. A crystal desk clock was sitting on top of a small box on the top shelf. I picked the clock up and sat it and the box it was on top of on the middle shelf. I then turned to get something on the opposite side of the closet. When I heard a crash! The clock had fallen off the box and landed on the 28. It broke the hood into 3 pieces. Almost perfectly down the middle and a triangular shape on the front. It broke the lens in two (I know to have an intact lens is a rarity in itself). I almost started crying, here it’s lasted since the late 40s with only minimal wear, and I total it within a month. I was able to get the pieces to fit back together, with masking tape holding it all in place. Is there a glue I can use to hold it all back together? Does super glue melt bakelite like it does plastic? In case you’re wondering, the clock didn’t have a scratch. I’d rather it had broken than the 28.

Gorilla Glue. Remember that Gorilla Glue needs the edges to be moistened to work, and it foams, but don't worry, can scrape that off later. Just put it back together one piece at a time.

I had the same thing happen to me when I ordered two model 28 units, seller was a numpty and packed them overlaid on top of each other, in opposite positions. The top one survived but the bottom one was busted apart as well as the bolts that hold the bag on punched through the side of the box and one of them sheared off.

I was not too sad because both of them were missing equal parts off each other (what one had the other did not) so I figured I would take the busted one's parts off and build up the other one. I bought them because the seller or someone had custom painted it a gorgeous blue in automotive paint (Pontiac GTO kind of turquoise) and did a damn good job at it, so I had the idea to continue this work and build it up as a custom and then later on someday look for an original 28.
