Hi folks, I recently picked up this vacuum and was hoping to learn more about it. It even has the original box. It says the model is "Special" but I don't find anything about that model on the internet. THANKS!

That is a Model R you have there, from about 1959-1960 if memory serves correct. And that's an American Electrolux....our Canadian Electrolux models were a bit different. If you look in the Vacuumland Archives, we had the models 83/86/88/89 thruout the late 1950's to 1973.

I do believe your Model R was considered an "economy model" but could be wrong on that though, so don't quote me for sure! I have always thought they were a cute little vacuum. Take care of it & give it a good spa treatment & service the motor, & that Electrolux will most likely outlive you.

Congrats on your find....Rob

Rob, you're one letter off on the model. It's actually a model S. If memory serves, it was produced from about 1956-1957 and I do believe you're correct in that it was a "special" or "economy" model. i had one a long time ago that I passed along to another collector. Very cute, light-weight, no-frills machine.

L R or S? LOL! You guys are confusing me LOL!

>;-)

It shines up nicely with a wash and wax. I'm giving it to my step mom who has been using the same G model since new. This one will live and work in their camp by the river.

Picture of the box. Lightest vacuum of its day!?

So what model is it and what years? I'd love to be able to tell my step mom.

It is for sure a Model S. The model number should be stamped somewhere on the cleaner. Maybe on the bottom between the rear wheels, or if you take the bag cover off, perhaps on the lip of the bag chamber? I haven't had one in so long that I don't recall where to check on that particular model.

Fred, thanks for the correction....I totally forgot about the Model S! Plus, the Model R does look pretty much identical, but the Model R has a cord halo on the rear, whereas the Model S does not. My apologies to Don for leading you astray unintentionally :-)

IT is

indeed a Model S. Date of build was 1957. It sold for $69.95 and was a drop down model from the Model AF that also was out in 1957. It was the lightest weight vacuum cleaner that did heavy duty work to date.

The Model R

came out in 1960 with power nozzle connection . It was the drop down model for the Model G. In July 1963 the Model L came out in white as a drop down for the Tan G.

-S-

Great vac and hard to find in any condition due to relatively short production time much less this nice and with box!The upholstery nozzle is from an earlier XXX.Otherwise this was the complete outfit with the crevice tool being optional.I think the S was sold with only the cloth bag and a suggestion to use paper.Would be perfect for a river or lake cabin.

Years ago I found a model S on the curb; the previous owner managed to fill up the bag past its maximum capacity & the bag ripped. After I took it home, I cleaned the S inside & out, put in a HEPA bag & it "runs good as new" after spa treatment.

A sweet and lovely little machine and a nice find! The Model S is kinda rare. It actually would be a shame to put it to actual, regular use and spoil it since it's so nice. And btw the hose looks great but surely leaks like a sieve. If you ARE going to use it as a "daily driver" you should get a new hose for it and save the old one ... and For Lord's Sake save that beautiful original box -- it's as scarce as hens' teeth!!

Standard Model S bag

I had a Model S when I was a kid. It wasn't in good shape and ended up being traded in on a new Heritage II. My S had a shake-out reusable bag, like a Model XXX but the rectangular shape. Did the economy models usually come with that bag? The bag cover has an intake tube that would go through the rubber seal on a disposable Electrolux bag if one were used. I would think they would have wanted to sell dispisable bags, regardless of the model. Also, these bags wouldn't work with the automatic models unless the demo cover were in place, and I don't know if those existed in the 50s. So, does anyone know how these were sold?

Thanks for the input and insight folks! This vac won't see regular use in the riverside camp but it will live there. I don't think my folks have even set foot in the camp in over a year. I will make sure they save the box too.
