BBC News this morning . The EU has made a law that vacuums only 900 watts or less can be sold. Hang on to your collectables. Could you imagine that here. BYE BYE 1600 watts.....

Reason they say anything over 900 watts uses too much energy.

One Brit commented I will have to live in pet hair, another one said they had blow dryers with more watts. Vacuum industry is trying to comply.....

Well, theoretically, a vacuum cleaner of roughly half that wattage should be more than sufficiently powerful enough if it's designed properly.

As Stan Kann (R.I.P.) used to say, all you need is enough suction to move the schmutz from the floor into the nozzle. And he's quite right. This current crop of utra-powerful vacuum cleaners is pretty ridiculous really, and more a matter of sales hype than anything else.

My 1951 Electrolux XXX is rated at 535 watts and I can thoroughly clean every hard surface in my home with it. The earlier XXXs were somewhat less powerful but still very efficient at removing dirt.

Then as to uprights, suction power is almost a non-issue as long as there is a motor-driven brush that agitates and sweeps up the dirt. You only need enough suction to pull the dirt into the bag (or whatever) from the nozzle.

The new law starting on the 1st September limits new vacuum cleaners to 1600 watts. In 2017 this will reduce to 900 watts. Also all new cleaners will have an efficiency label detailing the performance rating for carpets, hard floors, dust emissions, noise level and energy efficiency.

Most of the UK collectors and enthusiasts welcome this change and think it's a good thing, but some of the press is stirring up trouble by getting people to panic buy high wattage cleaners before the new law comes in.

I don't need a high powered dyson or vax to clean my carpets. I rely on (BERTIE) my hoover 700. He does a great job as I never allow shoes to be worn in my home so being only me here most of the time in my flat I only have surface dust to vacuum up anyway.

Just as electrolux137 mentioned when you have a belt driven rotating brush or beater bar, high power suction is just not needed.

I agree it just uses too much energy and a waste of time. A vacuum needs to clean not suck a golf ball through 10 feet of garden hose.

Old vacs from the 20s and 30s you buy on ebay often get shipped with a massive amount of dirt still in the bag which more than proves the fact that they still perform perfectly in the art of dirt removal as well as adding to the shipping costs.

Those cheap motors are overpowered anyway...perhaps, it'll keep someone from getting hurt or someone's house from burning down.  Now that's a GOOD THING!

weeelllll....

Suction is important, but not crucial. Sure, you can have a vacuum that has a ton of suction, but what good is it if you don't have airflow to move the dirt to the bag? Airflow, agitation, and suction are the 3 key elements to making a good vacuum.

that beaing said suciton airflow and agitiation are the keys yes and watts are less needed as long as the motor can create enough suciton and airflow from the fan .
I think vacuum cleaner companies have push the i can vac a glof ball ten feet trought the hose and still clean your house ... marketing if you ask me i rather use Bethy my blue Compact Electra C9 and my lux discovery 2 than some cheap over price overly useless chinese pos than my vintage A look good B work great my compact is a true work horse C i like keeping old iron working beaucaue the compact was a vacuum my grand ma had so it has memories that i want to keep alive .my 2 cents

I think it's a good thing. After all, here in the states we have been limited to about 1400 watts for as long as I can remember and my home certainly is not buried under a mound of dirt.

As collectors, we all know that you don't need crazy watts to clean properly. As this law goes into effect, peoples opinion will change. I think it's about time the general public see it our way.

It will all be forgotten about in a few weeks and I doubt the average consumer will notice any difference in performance when they start to use their new lower energy vacuums. Most people buy a new cleaner when theirs either goes bang or stops picking up like it used to, so the vast majority of new cleaners will perform better than the model it replaces.

Many people in the UK do not like being part of Europe and resent other EU countries dictating what we can and cannot do. Because said people are busy getting angry about that, the real messages get missed completely. For what it is worth, I'm all for lower wattage motors. It's been proven historically that a well designed vacuum cleaner can pack a punch from a motor not in excess of, say, a thousand watts.

I prefer my old Electrolux vacs (xxx-Golden Jubilee) over anything new made today; even though I like my "supercharged" TriStar EXL & new Eureka Mighty Mite.
