Great Electrolux 2100!

Hey everyone! First post here so be gentle

I just scored a like new Electrolux 2100 for $50 on craigslist and I'm loving it, got it for my mother who the trusty Kirby G3 had gotten too cumbersome for. Also she does not have carpet anymore so not really in need of a super good carpet cleaning vacuum.

Back to the 2100, the body doesn't have a scratch on it and I opened it up as I had to replace the control valve as the o ring failed, with a new one from my local Aerus dealer. It has almost no carbon or fine dust in it at all, it is definitely a super lightly used unit I'm so glad to have gotten it. However I am wondering what floor tool and extension tubes would be correct to have come with this machine. I had a couple metal Electrolux tubes that I got at a thrift shop a few years back and knew would come in handy one day and picked up the floor tool in the photos at the dealer (and damn that's a nice floor tool). In the manual for the 2100 there isn't any mention of a floor tool or wands, so I'd like to know what ones a dealer probably would have given to someone at the time when buying this machine. Can an Electrolux guy chime in and let me know!

I'll second the sentiment that you've got yourself a nice machine. I have its near twin, the Diplomat LX, which I rescued from beside a dumpster. My control valve was bad also but I took the cheap way out and just disconnected it. You seem to have all the correct tools for it although there are a couple of possible upgrades. One is to add a SideKick, which is a small power nozzle that you attach directly to the hose handle. It works much better than a turbo brush. You can pick one up on eBay for about $15 or $20. The other thing you might want to get is the older style two-sided 'flippy floor tool', which you can use with or without bristles facing the floor. Also, if you still have the tools from your mom's Kirby, they will also fit on the end of the Electrolux hose as they both use a 1.25-inch diameter connector.

You can search the archives for Electrolux 2100. Or search under username tig21er. He posted some spec sheets several years ago and I recall seeing this model.

I believe this model came out in the early 2000s. As opposed to the original 2100 from 1984 (which I have). The newer ones are nice because they have the more powerful motor. The VM1 I believe. I had this one (tank only) a collector practically gave me his Electrolux about two years ago. I sold most of them on eBay and kept my favorites.

I went ahead and searched. Here is the thread I'm referring to. It would have been the plastic wands and plastic floor tool would be my best guess. Not the combo flip over tool.

That is a great canister vacuum. I have one as well. Looks very similar to the current model Aerus classic but uses a two stage motor. As far as I know, the models such as the 2100, diplomat, and ambassador were very similar. A great design that works very well. I think your mom will love that machine.

The pic you posted would be about right for what would have been included with this model. Upgrade options would be the combination rug and floor tool to replace the single sided floor tool you have so you can clean delicate rugs without using the power nozzle. All Electrolux canisters were sold with this combination rug and floor tool until they merged with Electrolux of Canada which is where this model you have morphed from including the single sided floor tool. I think they went on the cheap when they stopped including the combination rug and floor tool with every canister model. It is still included today on the Guardian Platinum model and available as an upgrade option for the Lux Legacy and Lux Classic. I’ve managed to collect quite a few of this dual sided tool because I just love it personally and it works with any 1 1/4 wands provided there is no lock button on the wand. It’s a very universal tool.

The wands that may have been included would have been plastic but honestly I prefer the aluminum ones as they don’t flex like the plastic ones and are lighter weight than the steel ones they also made.

Note that the aluminum wands can be added to the power nozzle wand should you need a really super long wand!

The sidekick is quite convenient and well made with a geared belt and it makes stair cleaning and fabric upholstery cleaning a breeze especially if you have pet hair on your upholstery and stairs.

I always like to open the bottom of the bags before inserting into the machine so it’s opened like a paper lunch bag and nice and squared at the bottom. This way when the bag is full, it will stand up.

The bags get inserted into the bag compartment hole, then you close the door. My idiot partner didn’t know this and tried to fit the bag over the door collar and then stuff the bag in and shut the door and the bag won’t line up that way. He accused me of ordering the wrong bags! Haha… I told him though just drop the bag in and it self seats in its rim and you close the door to pop the bag open. If you rip the cardboard tab off the bag gasket will make a loud whistling or moaning noise so don’t do that. It’s designed to stay in place and the bag door self cuts the tab when you shut the door. The Electrolux man told my Mom this when he sold her her model L back in the 70s and we’ve never had a bag issue…ever by doing it this way.

I love the light weight of that machine…canister weighs just over 12 pounds…about the same as a model L which was advertised as the world’s lightest weight heavy duty vacuum cleaner. Canister shape nicely fits on a stair too!

I like the model you have because it has the automatic control. The Lux Classic does not have that feature.

There is an after filter under the back top grate. Push in the tab on the back edge of the grate and swing it up to open and replace the filter. You can also attach the hose in there should you need a blower function instead or need to clear a clog in the hose, wand, or an attachment.

Just wanted to add a couple thoughts. The 2100 is a great machine. The original 2100 introduced around 1984 is my personal favorite of the plastic bodied machines. The first version of the 2100 did not have the combination tool clip and shared the same power nozzle as the Diamond Jubilee, the PN 5. My mother’s friend had one when I was young and she let me use it on two or three occasions. My mother’s friend also worked at the Electrolux Branch office in Tulsa around the 1960s.

I personally prefer using the plastic bodied Electrolux canisters over the metal ones. The plastic body is lighter weight yet still durable, they have an after filter and the PN 5 and above deep clean carpet better than any of the previous PNS especially with a new brush roll. I know some collectors will debate me on this. I do like the metal bodied canisters for collecting and occasional use. I probably have at least 8 of the plastic body machines and even more of the metal bodies.
Electrolux really got it right! The bags seal very well and do not fall out of place in the canister. HEPA bags can also be purchased. Although I prefer using the older genuine bags.
