In the 1950s several new editions of previous works of Archimedes of Syracuse, a Greek mathematician and scientist, were published in the US. These may have inspired Eureka execs to ride the wave and design its Golden Crown Super Roto-Matic canister vacuum based on the legend of Archimedes and the Golden Crown.
Anyway, according to the July 1964 Shipping Record of Eureka Vacuum Cleaners posted by Nick (texbodemer), two models were produced: the 960 from Feb 1957 to July 1959 and the 960-A from July 1959 to Sep 1961. Until recently when I saw the ratings plate of the latter, I was unsure of the difference(s). They are the 750W/6.5A/115V motor ratings of the 960 and 720W/6.0A/120V motor ratings of the 960-A; and the ribbed vinyl hose of the 960 versus the polyethylene braided hose of the 960-A.
Eureka also produced the Model 260 upright in the same Iridescent Cream, Light Pastel Green, and Sparkling Gold color scheme. Wouldn't it have been the "cat's pajamas" if that would also have been named Golden Crown with a golden "crown"/hood? During that era, though, the company promoted its canisters more than its uprights as one can see in the attached magazine ad and others; presumably a golden hood upright would have upstaged the Super Roto-Matic. The Vanguard model-type 2080-A and the Dial-A-Nap model-types launched in 1969 would even the playing field of the two thereafter.
