Hi guys,

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum, no idea of the age.

Was just browsing ebay and noticed this up for grabs in my area and I'm thinking about going for it, could do with a new cylinder (canister) machine and this looks pretty interesting and unusual. :)

I know nothing of this brand, had never even heard of them until reading this forum!

What are they like? How is the performance?

Could any one give me an approxinate age on this machine?

Says it has a couple of tools missing, how easy would these be to find ?

Any help much appreciated!

Matt

I have only owned one. Strong machine, wonderful sound, a little clumsy for my situation and heavy. Very well made, probably last forever.

Hey Matt - if you can get it for a good price, go for it! Even if it turns out not to be quite what you're looking for, it's unusual enough in the UK to be worth trying out, and a resale would get your money back, if not make a profit!

Strong suckers, don't care much for their power nozzles which are a bit cludgy.
Tools are easy to find over here so there'd be no prob getting some sent to you I'd imagine.
Since they're bagless they use a big paper filter cone, like a giant Melitta coffee filter whether those are available over there who knows.. .but again you could get a pack mailed easily

Thanks for the help!

Will definately go for it I think.

Kinda new to the whole collecting thing, what would you say would be a sensible max bid?

Matt

The bug has bitten ....

Gosh Matt, could it have been the effect of sleeping in a roomfull (well stairway) of Hoover Juniors LOLOL Or maybe Jack was sending you subliminal messages as you slept - oh wait, no - it would be a Dyson you would be wanting if that had happened ..... (ducks and runs HARD)

If you can get this for the starting bid definatly go for it, I have seen them go for a lot more - although pick-up only often has a beneficial effect if it happens to be local to you. Personally I would not go too high as, reading between the lines, there might be a problem with it. Although I am sure there will be a fund of knowledge here if there is.

I would not be too concerned about replacing the nozzles (looks like upholstry and maybe hard floor) as you should be able to get pattern parts to fit if nothing else, it has the power nozzle (assuming it works and does not have a broken belt) and that is the main thing. One thing to be aware of, if you were thinking of using it as a daily driver, is that the PN is pretty large by the standards of UK homes so you might find it a bit clumsy to use - that PN would be wider than a Hoover Junior I would guess. Speaking of which I suppose you are on teh lookout for a 1036 too .....

Matt & Filter Queen...

Hello Matt.

As Al said, "...reading between the lines, there might be a problem with it..." I also got that same 'feeling' from the listing.

I don't really do repairs of other machines, besides Kirbys; however, if it would end up being a motor issue with it, I happen to have acquired a new 230 volt Filter Queen motor.

Let me know if you may be interested in it, if need be.

Cheers & hagd all,

Bill

That is a great machine. And it has the better (in my opinion) of the two powerheads that Filter Queen made. I like the smaller powerhead. Filter Queens are easy to work on -- not too many parts to make up the cleaner -- nice and simple. That will clean up very nicely. I have 2 FQs, I use one of them all the time.

it would be a Dyson you would be wanting if that had happene

alistair started it, LOLZZZ

have a brownie canadian with the small head and its one of my faves, they are quiet w/o powerhead, awesome suction, great vacs

The bug

Well if it hasn't bitten yet it's certainly snapping at my heels!

I'll certainly be on the lookout for a 1036, amongst many others (if only I had the room!)

I guessed by the looks of it it will probably be completely impractical, too heavy and too big to use in my house, but that's not the point is it!

For that price even if it does have issues I'll still be bidding. :)

I think Jack might have been sending me subliminal messages, I've gone from a member of the anti-dyson brigade (based on my misinformed knowledge of their machines, having only used Mum's DC01) to falling in love with my Nana's new DC24 and being sooooo close to bidding on a DC07 origin near me the other week!

Matt - SHHH! Someone will hear you! You'll have to flee your home and change your identity, or you'll be hauled off for 're-education'!

Well...

I've just won it for £10!

Will be interesting to see what condition it's in etc.

Will keep you all posted!

Matt

Bargain!!

How much do you suppose the original owner paid for it?!

Looking forward to seeing/hearing more! :)

I Think you'll love it.

I have a Filter Queen Princess II and it is my favorite canister. Very powerful, very quiet, and a great cleaner. If you don't get a manual with it, check the manuals section on this site. It will provide you with what you need to keep it in tip top shape, especially filter wise.

Cone Filter

Anyone who says a Dyson is messy to empty has clearly never tried to empty one of these! Interesting design though :-)

The messy I remember. Very much like a shop vac, but with more dust everywhere. Nice looking machine, love the sound on low speed.

Now....

The suction is absoltely amazing! So quiet too! It's actually a lot lighter than I expected, lighter than a Henry I'd say. The filter system is fantastic too, the dust container STINKS of dog, yet the exhaust air smells perfectly fresh!

I don't like the "Bagless" dust collection system, it's hardly bagless since it has a disposable paper filter catch dust, and is very messy to empty. Still an excellent machine though!

Now generally the machine is in good conditon, apart from a couple of issues. Please do excuse me, I'm not the most technically minded person, especially when it comes to vacs. Firstly there is a slight crackling sound when the machine is running, as if it's constantly sucking up crumbs. Could this be worn motor brushes?

Also, the brushroll on the power nozzle pretty much stops dead when you place it on the carpet. I guess it needs a new belt right?

This brings me to what could be a more difficult problem. One of the screws on the base of the power nozzle won't unscrew, it just keeps going round and round but won't come out, trying to just pull it out dosen't work either.

Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks!

Matt

My mom had 2 FQs and I have one also. I use her method to empty the bucket. Remove the motor unit and place 3-4 layers of newspaper on top. Pull the edges over the side, hold tightly and flip the canister over. Then slowly remove the canister and fold the edges of the newspaper towards the centre. I find that produces very little dust.

update

having used it for a while, I have to say, I'm not that impressed. Comparing it to my Mum's numatic Hetty the other day, it does infact weight slightly more, and certainly has noticably less suction that the numatic!

It's quite clumsy and uncomfortable to use, I still have to get a new belt for the power nozzle, so I'll reserve judgement on it's carpet performance until I have that.

All in all I'd say a very well built machine, but very clumsy and impractical in use, VERY unpleasant to empty and with good, but not great suction.

I think I'll get the belt and perhaps attachments too, use it a bit then sell it on and use the money to get a Miele S4 :-)

I'm pleased I bought it though, at least I got to try one!

I like my FQ, except for emptying the container. I usually take the motor unit off and place a small garbage bag over the machine, flip it, and empty it that way. Make little to no mess. HOWEVER, when I am curious to see how much the machine has picked up, thats when it gets messy. The rim of the bucket and the top of the cone seem to collect an awful lot of fine fine dust, and whenever you move it, the dust just goes all over the place!

Odd about the suction since iirc all the FQ's that wee Davey has tested over here at my place with his vac gauge were hi performers, if not the best along with Compacts. Are you sure there nowt blocking the hose, wands or the air channels in the nozzle. Compare those to just the inlet port on the vac itself.

If you're hearing a crackling noise, the motor brushes may not be seated and may be arcing. If that's the case, it won't run at its full speed and power.

Don't get me wrong

The suction is very powerful, just not as powerful as a Numatic or a Miele, given their price new and the prestigious reputation they have, I expected a lot more.

The crackling noise is only there when it's completely empty, as soon as theres a bit of fluff in it it seems to go away. I figured that would mean it is literally just grit and crubs in the tub?

Matt

Have to agree with you....regarding the F/Q suction

I have the red Filter Queen Majestic - I'm guessing from the mid 1990's with the "chromed" plastic power nozzle like you. The suction is great when an attachment is placed right on the end of the hose, but once you add the wand - it's not so much. Plus, if you have the non-electric floor head - it doesn't seem to pick up all that well.

And emptying the unit can be cumbersome - with the garbage bag over the canister to get the big dump; and then wiping and wiping to get the residual out of the "bucket"...

HOWEVER, you have to admit that it is kind of cool to have a Filter Queen in your collection. It seems to have some "prestige value" - and they are very handsome machines.

And, of course, there are older people out there who would use nothing else. So, there's got to be something that I'm missing - guess we'll just have to keep at it until we found out just what that "something" is.
