You may be reffering to the
Robb,
I'm assuming here, but it seems that you may be reffering to Eureka's "Touch-Power" handgrip that was available on many of Eureka's TOL models during the 1970's. I believe that Wards offered a Signature model with the feature also during that period.
Heres a explanation of how the system worked. I"m about 99% positive on this matter as I have one like this. It'snot near me, but I've used it enough to know.
The "Touch-Power switch" so to speak was embedded on the bottom of the grip, where your fingers squeezed it while you were vacuuming carpets. It wasn't a rocker switch, it was more of a momentary lever that when squeezed activated the vacuum and when let go shut the vacuum off.
This grip was rather famous, or IN-famous depending on whom you have or have not talked to. The option was gone by the BrandyWine Eureka series in 1980. My 1974 Eureka Golden Touch Power 2082 has this feature, and while it's cool, and definitely has some merits, you do have to hold the grip tightly, otherwise the machine will turn on and off as your grip on it changed.
On the front of the handle, about 3 inches down from the grip where you would normally find the two or three position power rocker switch on lower end models with a one or two-speed motor, was a different type of three-position rocker switch.
Instead of reading OFF-ON, or OFF-HIGH-LOW for the non-TouchPower models, this three position rocker enabled you to select from the top to bottom HIGH-LOW-ATTACH. When you selected the ATTACH selection the machine turned on HIGH SPEED irregardless of whether the grip was squeezed or not.
This ATTACH positon of course allowed you to use the attachments without holding the grip which would have been crazy as a bedbug had they not added this in the feature.
If you selected HIGH for example, when you squeezed the handgrip the machine would vacuum on HIGH speed, and or LOW depending on where you set the rocker.
Hope that this helps you...
Maybe someone has a picture that they can show of this option? Jeff, Kyle ...anyone???
