I picked this up and give it a quick cleaning. This is my first old Eureka and I have to say I like it a lot. From what I've read and seen it looks like it should have a Boxtop bag. I still need to get a new bulb for it. Just a Few Questions...

1. What kind or servicing needs to be done to the motor? should I oil the bearings? can you still get carbons for this? it says its a 3.5 amp.
2. Can you still get new brushes for the VIbragroomer?
2. Is there anyway to get a hold of a old box top for this? I'd love to get it all fixed up.
3. Did the handle have a grip on it? or was it just a curve in the pipe?
4. Fill me in on this :) I really don't know much about it!

Great find, Preston!

I have one of those myself, and let me tell you -- they are wonderful machines! Well-built, and if properly cared for, will last a lifetime.

To answer your questions:

1. Whatever you do, DON'T OIL THE BEARINGS! Your local vacuum shop can repack them in special grease if they're dry, but don't oil them. As far as I know, carbons are still available -- my vacuum guy recently did the motor on mine, and I think one of the things he did was replace the carbons. So I'm pretty sure they're still out there. Not only that but from what I can tell the motor in the 2072 is the same as the one in the current Sanitaire line, and carbons are available for them, so ...

2. New brushes are still available. They can be ordered from vacuum parts suppliers like Hesco (http://www.hescoinc.com) or from your local vac shop: you may also be able to find them on eBay. Search for "eureka vg1 brush strips", and you should be able to find some.

3. Box top bags are harder than hen's teeth to come by. Electrolux/Eureka has long discontinued them, and as far as I know they have been available in vacuum stores for several years. (I MAY be wrong, however!) From time to time, they do show up on eBay -- so I would check them out.

4. There is supposed to be a grip on the end of the handle. If you need a replacement one you can get one from your local vacuum shop, or from eBay. I've included a link to an auction where one is available for sale.

I hope this information helps you. I love my vintage Eurekas: like I said before they're really wonderful, well-made machines that will last a long time if given lots of TLC!

Hi Preston! Wonderful Eureka you got there!

This line of Eurekas was introduced by Eureka Williams in 1973 (just before the takeover by Sweden's Electrolux) and in the 1974 testing of vacs by Consumer Reports, the 2042 and 2082 were top-rated. The 2082 was identical to your model except it had a Cordaway cord reel and a Power Touch handle that turned the vac on when you gripped it. I remember that descriptions of the box-top bags at the time used the adjective "brocade" meaning a richly decorated woven silk-like fabric that is actually quite beautiful.

Important hint for using the Rugulator height adjuster - always tilt the vac back on its rear wheels with the handle in the upright stored position when attempting to slide the Rugulator. It makes it far easier to move!

One of Eureka's very best uprights. The design is still being sold as a Sanitaire to this very day! :-)

Thanks everyone!

I tend to be a DIYer. I have some hight temp moly grease. Is this what they use in the bearings?

Is there a place on line to buy carbons?

thanks everyone for your help! :)

Carbons

The shop that I mentioned, Hesco, should have the carbons. Check the link that I posted in my earlier reply for their website.

The BEST!

These are far better than todays Sanitaire...not because they are more powerful, because they are not, but they clean better because they are metal....the extra weight keeps the machine level on the rug, Sanitaires are plastic, so when you pull them back they :Nosedive"..this makes them dig in on the backstroke, thus the belts slip and wear out....if you put the more powerful Sanitaire motor in one of these, along with the Vibra Groomer 1 brushroll, nothing today would even come close!

It is a great cleaner. I'm liking it more than my kirbys! I want to make sure it's running like new. I plan to do a full tear down and rebuild. I've looked but can't find online much information on how to do this.

I replaced the brush strips on the brush roll. they were practically no existent.

I need to replace the cord and the part where the cord enters the handle. where would you recommend getting these? is there a good place for parts online? Not much help locally. And what about the sticker that has all that beautiful wood work and lettering? are those replaceable?

I'm thinking of trying to sew a bag and fit a top fill tube to it to make it more resemble what it would have looked like. these seem to be pretty rare in my area, mostly just plastic crap around these parts in second hand stores, i was so glad i found this one. :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
