That was my very first

new vacumm that I ever bought when I went moved out of my parent's house back in the day...like 1986 or so. Wow brings back some memories!

This brings back memories for me too as I'm pretty certain my grandma used to have this vacuum. I would like to get one as well.

Does anyone know when Eureka went from 4 digit model numbers to 3? I have my mom's which is similar but maybe from 1983-ish, model 1942. It has a darker gray hood, with white trim and has a rugulator instead of the dial-a-nap, and does have the vibra-groomer II. I remember when I went to shop for it, I had an ESP at the time that I loved, but she only had two carpeted rooms, so I bought the 5.5 model, and I don't notice that big of difference in performance from the ESP model. Hers came with kind of a squarish plastic handle which I hated, so found a chrome Sanitaire handle with a white grip at a friends vac shop, so it has a much better feel to it. I also had him change the cord out to a longer cord, and my friend Philip(Kirbyvertibles) gave me a conversion tube for the bag so I can use the Sanitaire ST hepa bags in it. The outer bag is really attractive but just vinyl, so the hepa bags fit the bill for good filtration. It's a pleasure to use and I don't think there's a scratch on it. Poor mom never knew what upright she would find in her closet, as I wheeled and dealed vacs back then, but I was warned to never to sell her pink GE canister, or the fur would fly!

Nice vacuum congrats on the find. Yes, the headlight cover would be necessary. It would drive me crazy if I found a nice vacuum w/o a headlight cover!

I have the 630... I never use it though. It was a vacuum from my childhood... my "grandpa" (not blood related but a close family friend that took care of me when I was really young) bought it at Kmart when I was about 4 years old. He had that and a blue bagged Kenmore twin fan that turned on when the handle was released. I could never decide which to play with. I don't use it because I don't love it (much prefer the 1934A or the Sanitaire for actual use), but I keep it for sentimental reasons. The number 630 has followed me around most of my life (friend's birthdays, the number of my storage unit when I moved into my apartment, my employee number at work, was written on an old phone at work with as an extension for someone named "angel")... so I really can't get rid of the Eureka 630 even though I don't use it and don't have much room for vacuums I don't use/love.

Of the three pictured, I think the 631 looks the best. Classic shape and love the color.

631

My Eureka look just like the 631, but the bag is a lighter green (I cant tell from the pic if that one is green or off white) and the Sticker for the Dial-a-nap is white with only 4 hights.Mine is Model# 1486, mabe the 3 digit models are the better like the 631 has 6 hights on the D-A-N?

Hey Rick A. ! Your Mom sounds like mine, except the fur would fly if I put ANY upright vac in her closet. With her, it was a canister or nothing. BTW, were you lucky enough to get your Mom's pink G.E.? Later, Trg

I am still surprised that my mom wanted an upright vacuum sometime after we got the room sized carpet remnant, or the wall to wall carpet. First it was a red and cream Convertable from True Value Hardware, then the Concept with Power Drive, then the black Eureka Precision Boss I bought her twenty some years ago, to go with the black Mighty Mite she wanted so bad. Both are still here, and plastic or not, they only go when I'm dead.

Love them

I think the only true "good" Eureks from the upright family. The Canned hams and Princesses were the work-horses of the canisters I think. Althogh the Express was one of my favorites they weren't the most durable =)

Steven,

Great Pictures! In my opinion, Euerka's were some of the best work horses on the market. I don't think any other upright (sold in department stores) cleaned as well as the Eureka.

Now that Sanitaire has added the ST Bag to the line...I don't think you can beat it for cleaning and improved filtration.

Stephen, Beautiful collection. My grandparent would only buy Eureka, so many of those cleaners look familiar to me. I one day hope to go up in there attic and take all of there old machines for myself. My favorite machine of there was a 16" wide stroke which I think may have been called a samson. Thanks for the pictures - Jon

OMG....how beautiful.

Thanks for these photos Stephen! Love the green Cordaway upright.

Now, time to search Mapquest for a nice summer drive down to Falls Church, Virginia! I'm inviting myself!!!! :)

absolute beauty.

that has to be one of the very finer, collection of Eureka's i have ever seen, when i saw them. one thing came to my mind, my uncles 630, absolutely wonderful cleaner, i believe that a eureka he had, yes in fact a few of them were the only vacuums he ever bought to compare to his wal-mart bought dirt devil[forgot model] and for that purpose only, and he fell in love with it the first day, he tossed the dd, and said" where has this cleaner been all my life", wife looked over with a glare, and they both laughed. but that 630 has outperformed so many cleaners in the past, it was one of the few i was actually jealous of. anyway take care, and enjoy that marvelous machine.

OOHHH

I LOVE THOSE EUREKAS! I will never forget my grandparents Eureka 1931, which is still my favorite cleaner ever. I am still searching for one, but one day I shall find one! Apparently the story about the cleaner was that my grandma had had Hoover's all her life, so when her brown Convertible died, she deiced she wanted to try another brand. So she bought the Eureka. She had it until 2001 when my Grandpa bought her a Hoover Caddy Vac for Christmas and then she (evilly) donated it to the Goodwill. So for my 5th birthday (2002) I asked for a Eureka vacuum, not knowing that there was more than one model LOL! And I got a Eureka Boss, with a hard-cover bag in the fount!

So every since I have been obsessed with F&G Eurekas and I grab every one in good shape at Goodwills.

Eureka ! I have found it !!!

Stephen, I too love your Eureka collection. It is very colorfull seeing the many decades standing all together.
I remember the "Chrome Dome" upright as we sales folks refurred to them
back in the day! I started as rep. with Eureka in Feb. of 79.
There were a few of those still in the furniture stores on
the country Roads in Southern Ohio. The ESP line had just
become available. So I just had to have the 2087, of which you
have a beautiful example of. The white and the dark Burgandy
color was awesome, sitting next to any of the Hoovers of the day. Then to turn it up on end to show the customer the Aero
dynamic styled beater bar, was usually a sure sale.

Brian, if you ever do make the Drive from Tronto. Know that
you are more then welcome to stop in Columbus ohio to see my
mixes of decades and brands. I can swap stories about being
a Eureka rep. in 1979-1983, before opening my own vacuum sales
and service here in Columbus.

Eureka, 3 digit models ! with a letter after !

These for sure, were K mart models. Some were also catalog
models. As in the 1980's there was a burst of catalog hardlines catalogs. In fact, the Electrolux I have from the
80's. Say's made in Canada ! It was one of the earlier budget type models, in plastic. That came out in the 80's

Eurekaprince Brian....You are more than welcome to come down to Falls Church anytime! There are plenty of Eureka's in my collection to try out.

Norm...Thanks for the imput on the Eureka model numbers. As much as I love Eureka, I have found it difficult to find information on Eureka's. I had to go to Bloomington, IL last summer to see what kind of info I could research and to see the old Eureka HQ too!

Stephen

Stephen, where do you find all these immaculate cleaners?! I can't see a single scuff or scratch; they look like new! How long has it taken you to accumilate so many pristine machines?
