I grabbed one today because it was under $10. I was disappointed to find out that it is from the 80s and not from the 70s as I had originally hoped, but the orangish-red and white color will match my kitchen well. I get to pick it up on Wednesday. Did Hoover or Eureka make any orange colored upright vacuums in the 70s? I would guess that they did.

For sure. My parents bought a very basic orange and beige Eureka Dial-a-Nap upright for our vacation apartment in Hallandale, Florida in the summer of 1976. I’m pretty sure we bought it at the local KMart store for around $100, including a set of nice beige attachments with a chrome steel wand. No headlight, but a sturdy metal motor hood and metal two-piece handle.

The one I found just has a plastic handle. Kirby's and Rainbows are everywhere where I live, but upright Eureka's and Hoover's are hard to find!

Eureka canisters

I would love to find some Eureka canisters from the 1970's, Eureka was late to the game with their power nozzle models but from what I have heard, when they did finally come out with them they were a huge success. I would also love to find one of the Eureka sweet 16 models, I think those were also known as the ironside. It's a shame Eureka's quality has gone down so far, at one time they made some of the best vacuums available.

Is it supposed to have a headlight? If so, how would I access the bulb?

I can tell you three major clues to date a Eureka upright...

1, this has a metal hood, but a plastic base. Eureka switched to the plastic base in 1975.

2. This has the new boxy, plain Eureka logo. Eureka changed their logo from that that had the Electric "E" in front of it, to the logo your has in about 1983.

3. Eureka started using the plastic handle in 1983 as well.

Yes, your model does have a headlight. there are little slots on either side of the plastic lens, you insert a flat head screw driver, and pry out the lens.

I tried that, but I was afraid I was going to break the lens in half, and the screwdriver was starting to dig into the plastic. What a silly design!
