Hi,

I posted something similar to this a few months back but I never got a straight answer so Im just going to ask again on the off chance that someone sees this who knows what happened. Electrolux in the UK were a very popular vacuum cleaner brand, they sold affordable decent machines, the most popular at the end being the powerlite upright that they sold. Electrolux was everywhere, and there machines were to with a few still around about 6 or 7 years after the brand vanished. And thats literally what they did. Vanish. Without word of warning, you could all of a sudden no longer buy an Electrolux vacuum cleaner in the UK, or any Electrolux appliance for that matter. I was wondering if anybody knows what happened? Or wether TTI owned them and decided to stop using the name in the UK? The strange thing is they still have a UK website with genuine spares for most of their vacuum cleaners and other appliances. How can they go from being this popular one minute to just vanishing the next? I would love to hear what happened from anybody that knows as nobody seems to know and im surprised of how little fuss has been kicked up over it. Everyone seems to have just shrugged it off. I would love to hear anything you might know!

Electrolux vacuums are available in the UK under the AEG brandname. Germany's AEG is now a division of Sweden's Electrolux company.
For some reason, Electrolux took their name off of many vacuum cleaner lines around the world. In fact, they completely discontinued selling European Electrolux vacs in North America - as well as South Africa if I remember correctly. But they are still available in the UK under the AEG brandname.

In the US

Same thing happened here in the US. The US versions were owned and made by Eureka after the buyout of the name from the US company. That became Aerus which still builds the same US product ....Then the Eureka Electrolux machines were sold but suddenly have vanished in the US. I think the last time I saw one in a store was 3 or 4 years ago in 2016 or 2017. I don’t know though, perhaps they killed the brand because the Eureka made machine many US customers felt were inferior to the old US built Electrolux, now Aerus machines and didn’t know of the name change to Aerus and people tried the Eureka Electrolux machines and may have been generally disappointed moving on to Shark or Dyson which dominate the US market. Perhaps the Swedish company has bought the rights to use the name worldwide after much confusion. They were the first to have it and perhaps just wanted to keep it? People associate a product name with one company not multiple. It seemed to grow into multiples over time as they branched out worldwide and sold off the name in other countries, hence the rise of the Us US version in the 30s through 50s which stemmed out on its own in the 50s and everything including all product development went independent and different versions were then developed all over with different levels of quality morphing differently over the last 70 years. I have observed however that the former US Electrolux company now Aerus, which was originally the Swedish company, has entered into some sort of partnership with the Swedish company. The top of the line canister model sold here is the same as the canister sold in Sweden and I believe it’s made in Europe, however it uses the US Aerus made hose and attachments rather than the Swedish company’s product attachments. It’s all very convoluted if you ask me. Personally I don’t think Eureka’s involvement with the name did much of any good to the brand name as far as quality goes. They seemed to just make Eureka twins with the Electrolux name in them and they didn’t measure up to either the Swedish company’s or American company’s quality or service level.

I hate that the US company gave in to the sale of the name because it was not highly publicized and if you ask the average person if they know what an Aerus is vs and Electrolux they will know the Electrolux name but be clueless about the Aerus name unless they had an American Electrolux at the time of the name change and frequented the service stores for bags and other parts and then learned of the new name. But there are so many owners of the US Electrolux branded product that didn’t need service and bought generic bags and door to door sales stopped as well so when these people try to look for service, they think it’s simply vanished as they do not know to search for Aerus. Aerus has maintained some rights to use the Electrolux name to refer to the previous products but they never highly publicized the name change. A grave mistake they made here in the US I think. This is likely the same reason you are having the same problem there. Likely a name change and they didn’t publicize it enough to the most important people...consumers who want the product.

Eureka's plant in Bloomington never made the Swedish Electrolux vacuums that were sold in North America. When the original European Electrolux company bought back the rights to use their brandname in North America, they began to export 120-volt versions of their European cleaners for sale in North America. They all said "Made in Sweden" or "Made in Hungary". The only thing Eureka made for Electrolux at it's US factory (or plant in Mexico) were power nozzles (and compatible electrified hoses and wands) and one upright: the Oxygen Three Ultra upright. And though Consumer Reports top-rated that upright for performance, it was very prone to problems needing repair. The simpler suction only canisters were actually very good performers: lightweight, powerful, quiet and offering excellent filtration. One of these was the highly-rated UltraSilencer Green canister.

On the other side of the ocean, Eureka and Sanitaire uprights were being sold to Europeans under the Electrolux brandname. Eureka's plant in Bloomington would install 220-volt motors in these cleaners and apply Electrolux logos and brandnames before exporting these overseas.

The Aerus/Electrolux dealer in my city, which closed down about four years ago, had a banner across its front window for a long time proclaiming the name change. That was how I first found out about it about ten years ago.

Since re-acquiring the rights to the name in the U.S. market, Electrolux Sweden has also come in big here with major kitchen appliances like refrigerators and dishwashers.

Thats intersting, I didnt know that Electrolux owned Eureka. I knew there was some connection but I didnt know what it was. Its nice that we still have AEG in the UK but the very popular (and very good) Electrolux bagged upright has not been passed over to the AEG name. Although Electrolux owned Eureka we never got any Eureka machines in the UK. Do Electrolux own sanitaire to? I think we may have had 1 or 2 sanitaire machines in the UK in the past but nothing major and certainly nothing now. I know that you guys in the USA have a sanitaire the proffesional upright in red, i dont know wether its still available over there, but we have the same machine over here model Z9120 in white and grey and branded up as Electrolux, but its not been available over here for 8 or 9 years now. I dont know the situation for parts for the machine in the USA but over here they are very rare with practically nothing available for this machine apart from belts and bags which is why mine is in such a state! The brush roll on these reminds me of a sanitaire commercial brush roll, I dont know if the brushes are replaceable on these, I have to say I have never tried with mine but they look to be, its nice to see a metal body brush roll in this day and age. The other machine I know you guys got in the US was whats called over here 'The Boss Stairmaster Backsaver' wether you got it under the Electrolux brand I dont know, but mine says made in USA on it. The last machine I am aware of that we both got but I dont own anymore, was the electrolux Vitesse. We only got the bagless version with a blanked out headlight but I beileve this machine was called the eureka maxima over your end and you got the miles better version that took bags and had an actual headlight not just a blanking peice! I think you got it in yellow aswell but we had the traditional electrolux colours of white mainly.

Sorry guys, dont know why the images uploaded sideways, anyway there you go. There is a few more spares available for the backsaver than there is the professional, you can still get genuine bags, belts, filters and brush rolls for the backsaver. You cant even find pattern filters for the professional so you might aswell forget about the brush roll. My back saver has had a new brush roll as when I got it out of a skip from my local recycling centre it looked ok but upon getting it home and plugging it in I quickly discovered the brush roll wasnt turning and there was a burning smell. I took the brush roll out and both the end caps had melted to the actual brush roll and wouldnt turn. I thought I was going to have to scrap the machine as I thought no way will there be new brush rolls for this but much to my surprise they are readily available brand new for 8.99 so why not! And in the UK, being able to find a spare part new and readily available for a 90s Vacuum Cleaner is quite impressive.

Here we still have vacuum cleaners under the Electrolux brand. Canister style cleaner, baged or bagless, but also cordless uprights and robotic vacs. But in some countries they are sold under an other brand

I reply: Yes, this is a common strategy used by manufacturers the world over to force otherwise perfectly repairable older appliances into obsolescence and thus feeding demand for their newer—and often inferior—products while further packing our ever-growing landfills. In my opinion, governments should give manufacturers healthy tax credits for making products that are both durable and repairable, as well as for continuing to stock replacement parts. This insane wastefulness has got to end somewhere.

A very unique chapter in the history of the North American Eureka company happened in the early 1960's: The British Parnall appliance company contracted Eureka to make 220-volt versions of theirs sleek "canned ham" MobileAire cylinder/canister cleaner featuring Eureka's new noisy Vibra-Beat carpet nozzle. Because one of the versions of our MobileAire was Eureka Model 1010, Parnall called the UK version "The TenTen"!!! Oh - your Electrolux Boss Stairmaster is indeed a Eureka Victory upright made at Eureka's main factory in Bloomington, Illinois. And, indeed, Sanitaire was the brand name that Eureka used for their commercial line of cleaners - since way back in the 1970's. When Electrolux bought Eureka in 1974, they got the rights to the Sanitaire name and products too. You had the ability to buy classic Sanitaire fan-first uprights labelled Electrolux in the UK over the years. They would have a

Sanitaire by Electrolux

Well I dont know why but we didnt have the Electrolux branded sanitaire uprights for very long in the UK at all, I have only seen pictures, never one in the flesh. I think you guys still have them though over in the states dont you? The Eureka Victory or as we over here know it 'The Boss' Stairmaster was a much much more popular machine than the Electrolux branded Sanitaire Uprights. The 'The proffesional' that we got over here by Electrolux was aimed at the domestic market, but I think your Sanitaire version was aimed only at the Commercial market for sone reason. I think the Electrolux branded Sanitaire uprights over here were aimed only at the commercial market.

Electrolux in the United States

I'm referring to the Swedish Electrolux company not Aerus. Aerus is continuing to make their cleaners as far as I know.
For some reason, Electrolux decided to completely pull out of the vacuum market here. They sold their Beam central vacuum brand to the Canadian company that makes the Duovac central vacuums, I think the company is called Nuera, Eureka was sold to a Chinese company, can't remember the name of it, and the Sanitaire brand was sold to Bissell. Electrolux also discontinued the vacuums with their own brand on them, I have one of them, the Ultra One, it's a very nice canister cleaner, probably one of the quietest and most powerful canisters that have been made in recent years. As far as I know, Electrolux is not selling their cleaners under any other brand here, they just left the market and sold off all of the vacuum brands that they owned to other companies.
