Is the XXX supposed to have VERY little suction? I tried the turbo brush test & the brush was barely spinning. The XXX has a newer coiled PVC vinyl hose & NOT the woven hose.

No, it should have pretty good suction, there is nothing to obstruct the airflow as long as the cloth bag and exhaust filter are reasonably clean. Should run very quiet with a very satisfying whoosh as air enters the hose.

Information gleaned from in other threads (using my mind's gleaner--not the carpet cleaner instrument-- haha):

1) cleaning or replacing worn fans
2) checking the hose inlet seal for deterioration and replacing if necessary
3) replacing the air filter located on the inside of the exhaust port
4) replacing the filter bag (the rubber seal may be worn)
5) performing the bubble test on the hose: lightly squirt a mild cleanser such as diluted dish soap on
the hose, then connect the hose to the exhaust port of the cleaner, turn it on, and cover the end of the
hose with your hand. Bubbles will form wherever there are leaks.
6) checking the hose for obstructions by passing a golf ball, quarter, or other small object through the
hose; connecting it to the exhaust port and putting the handle end in the intake port.
7) checking for and removing any obstructions in the bag chamber

I have a Model XXX, and the suction is pretty good, so unless your motor is deficient in some way you should be able to strengthen the suction power with the above suggestions. Best wishes.

The Model XXX

style fans were big on metal fatigue and they bend and break also check the Rubber motor mount for drying out and being cracked.

Not to mention, but its hardly blowing air thru the exhaust

Where can I find the bumper & rubber "donut" for the dusting brush?

I, too

Have a model XXX, and it doesn't have incredible suction, but it's pretty good for what it was in 1949, if you ask me. I did replace the hose it had with a new one, and it still is not a powerhouse. It does have a lot of airflow, however, and cleans carpets pretty nicely for such an old machine. I will have to tear into the motor and check the fans one of these days just to be sure everything's okay.

Thanks for the link! I didn't know that the rubber bumper/"donut" was still made

Update

Exhaust filter crumbled; I think this may actually be the cause for the XXX low suction. Will put in a new exhaust filter after giving the XXX a spa treatment.

Filter

Erik,

If the filter was in such bad shape to the point it crumbled on it, then it could very well have been restricting the motor so much it was affecting performance. I curious, you said you would replace the filter after you gave the machine a spa treatment. Do you have NOS filters, or are you making your own? My XXX that I use all the time has a great filter in it, but some of the others in my collection, well let's just say they are not the greatest in the world. I only have like two or three spare filters and I'm pushing close to (if not exceeding, I've lost count) 100 XXX's I obviously don't want to be swapping filters between units!

From my experience...

We have taken apart a Model S and a XXX rebuilt the motor, cleaned and repacked the bearings, cleaned the fans well. The fans on both were filled with a fine dust. After putting the motors back together and blew out the filters with a air hose, put them back together. They both run so much better and have great suction for their time. I feel if you use a new plastic style hose if you want to use it to actually clean it does perform better. The XXX went to a fellow young collector who wanted one, fixed, polished and gave it to him for free and he loves using it. Yes I have several extra in my collection..

Additionally, check to ensure that the two screws on the inside of the hose inlet are tight. A service tech advised me that many become loose over the years.

Electrolux 30

The 30 that I have had kind of low suction (without the hose) so I was going to take the motor out and clean the fans. When I started to take it apart I noticed somebody had put the filter in backwards. So I turned the filter around and now the machine has really good suction. Guess I don't have to take the motor apart now,, :)

After-market Electrolux Dusting Brushes

From what your link points to, this is for the entire brush complete. If so, these are after-market dusting brushes that work absolutely fine--in fact, there is almost no difference. And for the difference in price it's a no-brainer! Buy it! You won't go wrong. I have several of them and they work very well.
