Electrolux power nozzle bearing noise

It's been a vey long time since I've posted here but I need some help. I recently started using my Electrolux Renaissance as my daily driver and the bearing in the power nozzle that's closest to the belt is squeaking. I've had this machine for about 10 years and I bought it in nearly new condition, it's seen minimal use over its lifetime. I'm not sure if the bearing can be lubricated or if I should replace the motor in the power nozzle. I have my old Lux Classic sitting in a closet with a burnt out canister motor, but the power nozzle is in great shape. Can I swap the motor out of the Classic's PN and use it in the Renaissance? I'd like to keep the Renaissance as close to original as possible.

Steven, you should be able to put the Lux Classic pn motor into the Renaissance pn. The only difference is I think the Lux Classic pn motor might be slightly more powerful, the reason they did this was to accommodate the newer-style brushroll with the extra turn of bristles, so it would still run at the same speed & not bog down.

However, before you go ahead & start swapping out electrical components, I would take the brushroll from the Lux Classic & make sure it's not the brushroll bearing closest to the belt. Chances are, considering that brushroll is over 20 years old, that is what may be causing the issue & not the motor.

Thanks Rob! I replaced the brush roll in the machine when I bought it with the new style with the extra turn of bristles. I opened the nozzle up tonight before I posted and it's definitely the motor. I'll have to look into swapping out the motors. Is their a way to just lubricate the bearing of the original motor?

It could just need to be cleaned and oiled some of those motors had sleeve bearings.

@bimmer740 Personally I keep it kosher with tri flow synthetic oil lubricant.
You can use any light machine oil gun oil sewing machine oil.
The sleeve bearing into the motor just needs a few drops usually.

Steven, I would count on having to replace the motor entirely. Alex is correct, it may be possible to oil the bearing if it is a sleeve bearing - but it's only a matter of time before it starts making noise again & needs to be opened up & oiled again. You could be looking at having to do this every 6 months. And by the time the Renaissance was introduced in the mid 90's, sleeve bearings were starting to be phased out being used in brushrolls & powerhead motors.

Here is a new one on Ebay that is reasonably priced. Would be a shame to destroy that Lux Classic pn, get that vacuum a new motor & save it .

Rob, you were right, I had to replace the motor. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions! I lubricated the bearings with tri flow as recommended but it only helped for a few days before the noise started to come back. I ended up using the motor from the Classic pn and installing it was surprisingly easier than I thought, I was expecting to have to splice wires or change conenectors but everything just plugged right in.

Now for another question, can I replace the motor in the Classic with the older style motor, not the VM3 motor? I always hated how loud the Classic was compared to my Epic 6000! What a screamer! I think 6000 has better airflow too.

Steven, you could replace the motor with the Electro Motor double stage motor that the Electrolux canisters in the 80's & 90's used. But, in order to do so, you would most likely have to replace the bag compartment as well. The tube with the rubber seal that is seated on the motor's fancase is likely a little bit longer to accommodate the difference in length between the double stage motor's fancase & the single stage motor's fancase.

It would also depend on whether they changed the molding of the canister body itself & they changed the "brackets" molded into the body that holds each component in place. It's likely they didn't, but there's no way to know unless you opened up a 2100 & yours side by side to see. I would suggest visiting your Aerus dealer & explain what you want to do, they would know obviously seeing 2100's & Classic canisters for repairs.

If your Aerus Classic can take the double stage motor, I would suggest the LH6500SR motor in the link below. The standard Electro Motor pulls 100" waterlift, but this one pulls 117", which would make your Classic match the Guardian Platinum's performance.

I believe The Lux classic is the plastic model similar to a 2100/Ambassador.
A standard 5.7" double stage motor will fit. I put an Ametek Lamb motor in my 2100/Ambassador

I think I used a round foam gasket to seal the gap between the motor and the bag compartment.

I asked this seller a while ago regarding the motors on the Lux Classic since I wasn't sure. Apparently the older motors won't fit in the newer Aerus style canisters probably like from what Rob said, the bag compartments might be slightly different. I also doubt that they've changed the moldings on the body as well but maybe they did.

Sven - Is that your Electrolux in that picture? Great idea to put a Ametek 116311 TriStar CXL motor in it. That would be about the same waterlift as the original Electro Motor that was originally installed new at the factory, 90" waterlift. Plus one flaw the Electro Motor double stage motors have is, starting in the 90's, after 10 to 15 years the fan becomes damaged, & I don't believe replacing the fan is a option - you're stuck with replacing the entire motor. At least the Ametek double stage motors do have replacement fans for them if needed. Numatic uses a Ametek double stage motor that is similar in size & dimensions to the TriStar CXL motor, but pulls 110" waterlift. I acutally plan on using it in a canister vacuum I picked up that is a long-term project, but I'm keeping that top secret. Hint: It's a very well known American canister that was sold under 1 other different name, & was much more popular in America than it was in Canada, & it uses a Centec powerhead. Take a guess

Alex - Exactly. That's the reason why I suggested Steven should go down to a Aerus dealer & ask them. It's unlikely they changed the body molds, but if they went to the extent of changing the motor to a single stage motor, anything's possible right? This is the main reason why I always recommend for anyone to buy only Electrolux (not Electrolux AB), & not Aerus Electrolux. The quality of motors the Aerus canisters use, for the prices they command, isn't justified - especially when you can get a Miele C2 or C3 with a 228 or 236 powerhead for roughly the same price as the Aerus Classic, & it has a larger bag, better filtration & more features. You're better off buying a Electrolux & having it rebuilt with a new motor if you're absolutely deadset on Electrolux. It's sad to say this, but Aerus is going to have to get with the times & revamp their lineup if they want to stay in business.
