Yeah, I did the exact same thing to a forlorn Silverado Deluxe that I revived maybe four years ago. It's an easy mistake to make, but just as easily correctable. The way I had mine (mis)wired, the power nozzle would switch off when the canister was on, and vice-versa. At the time, I actually thought that might make a good practical joke.
I bought it cheap off of eBay, knowing it was missing a few parts, including the power switch, but what was also missing was a power nozzle that the description said it included. The seller apologized and refunded the purchase price, so I was only out the shipping cost. I thought that was reasonable, under the circumstances, especially since I got to keep the vacuum. The needed parts were easily sourced and putting it back into operating condition became a fun weekend project.
