Electrolux Motor

Today as I was vacuuming the motor on my electrolux model L suddenly dropped in pitch and had a faint electrical burning smell to it. I was using the PowerHead with the vacuum so it was hard to hear the drop in pitch.

I turned the vacuum off and waited for a few minutes and then turned it back on and it sounded fine.

Could my motor be wearing out, should I replace the carbon brushes?

Maybe the Vacuum is blocked? (forgive my ignorance, i don't know much about the causes of a motor overheating or w/e)

No, I don't think it is clogged the bag is less than halfway fill. The hose is a newer replacement bought within the last year and produces great suction. It could just be one of those things that happens in vacuums that are 37 years old.

I would really hate for it to breakdown. Out of all the Hoovers, Eurekas, DirtDevils and Kirbys that we have owned in the past. The electrolux is my favorite!!!! The Kirby being my second.

I think my Roll-Easy was doing the same. The only thing I could think of would be it's dry, aka needs grease. What kind of grease do most people use? I am going to try some Molybdenum Disulfide grease, or Moly grease for short, because it lasts a lot longer than normal grease and doesn't harden (supposedly). I also need help taking apart my Lewyt motor for greasing. Any advice? I think it has been pressed together, and I don't know how to get it apart. Thanks!

Interesting...

I have a Lux L do the same thing and I could never get it fixed. I tried everything, seating the carbon brushes, cleaning the commutator, and even new brushes. I eventually just found another working motor and gave up on fixing the old one.

Sounds like the armature has shorted. Replace it and you should be OK.
