Electrolux Model F.........

I just bought a beige Model F from a lady this morning. I could see there was a repair to the cord reel at the belden plug so I did not plug it in. I noticed about 4 inches up the cord, the outer casing was cracked. I figured I would reuse the plug and attach it higher up.

Upon closer inspection, pretty much the whole cord's internal wire casings are brittle. So now I can not use this matching cord reel.

Does anyone have an extra cord reel for a Model F?

With it, came an unopened package containing a rug rake. Do not know if it is rare, but it is up for trade.

So please let me know if you have a replacement cord reel for my F.

Since the cord reel was optional (at $19), the model F was designed to also be used with the reel. Simply add an extension cord (like used on the model L) and you can find out if the machine works properly. Most rubber cord on reels for the model F are cracked and brittle with age. I've not seen the cord for a model F that wasn't cracked in years.

I used to own a Model F and had the same issue. If you find someone that knows how to take apart the cord reel you can replace the cord and still use the original reel. I wouldn't call it a DIY project unless you know how to keep the spring inside from uncoiling accidentally which can be dangerous.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me that the Model "F" stood for "Fully Automatic"--meaning that the standard equipment included the disposable bags with their automatic seals and the automatic cord reel along with the automatic shut-off feature). Its predecessor, the Model E-A, had come with standard equipment of a cloth bag and a cord wrap along with the automatic shut-off feature.

Btw, I used an online inflation calculator and entered $19 in 1957 to learn that it's equivalent to approximately $160.00 in 2016 currency.

Actually, Paul, you have the cloth bag / disposable bag situation backward for the E-Automatic.


 


Disposable paper bags were provided with the E-A in a slender carton containing four bags. There's a notation in the instruction manual, "The cleaner may also be used with a cloth dirt bag" but that was not generally recommended because of reduced performance.


 


The salesman usually suggested that the buyer purchase a larger carton containing "18 Automatic Self-Sealing Disposable Bags and 2 Air Filters" (as well as suggesting the optional moth killer, moth crystals, garment bag, floor polisher, automatic cord winder, paint sprayer, Nuvo® Shampoo, floor wax, etc. etc. etc.!)


 


If the F" stood for "Fully Automatic, wouldn't the model designation have been "F-A?"! The Model F was never referred to as such, nor as "Automatic F." It was just "Model F." The automatic cord winder was still optional with the Model F, not made a standard accessory until the Model G when it was incorporated into the motor housing. (And in the Model G manual it is stated, "While it is possible to use your cleaner with a cloth dirt bag, it is not recommended."


 


And then, speaking of the Model G, what would the "G" in the Model G have stood for??! hahaha

Thanks guys..

I ended up cutting off about a foot of the cord looking for a point where the internal cord wire casings were not brittle. I attached a plug and the vac powered up strongly. There was an issue with the bag already in the chamber, a small tear. I replaced the bag and it sounds great.

Along with the vac, was a box of attachments and stuff. I have not taken everything out yet, but did notice the hose looks rough. Not so much the outside is damaged, more like distortions. Probably internal decay causing leaking. I will check that out this week when I have time.
