Hey Si:

Can you post a picture of the Challenge - I've never seen one.

Were there two different versions of the 55 in England and, if so, which came first? I have pictures of the 55 in both a red covering and a tan covering.

Electrolux - Luton, England, Uk

Hi James, congratulations on your latest toys!!, you havnt sold the Kirbys I hope to fund them!!! Electrolux are my favourite cleaner, (is it because I grew Up with them!!) My gran had the Z55, purchased in 1951, it was always kept under the dresser she kept in the walk-in pantry under the stairs, the detachable cord was always hung on a hook just near the door, it was always my job as a kid to plug the cord in and then carefully wrap it up again and hang it back on the hook!!!

Somehow one day it sucked up some water and blew the motor "Cleaners Konked Out" Gran said, not to worry a family friend was a Lux engineer, Mike was called for and he said "No Problem" using an engineer trick his disconected the motor and placed it in the gas oven on the lowest setting, Gran was having a cup of tea in the parlor, then an awful smell ensued...Gran didnt realise what he had done and so the engineer didnt realise that the "Regulo" was broken and the oven was "On High"..OMG...a melted mess was all that was left.....AND a brand new shiney Electrolux Z94 was delivered...and life returned to normal...

Lux

Thanks Doug for the information books, me thinks you have more stuff that we have here!!! but then you have been collecting rather longer....I think the difference in Z55 models was in the tools etc, tubes went from the solid chrome to the lighter wands etc...my Gran "Upgraded" her Z55 and bought the Pink & Cream Flip-Over Floor Tool of the Z65 to use with it...

The Z90 & 100 tend to be sought after and quite rare, well how rare is rare, non for years then 2 crop up in weeks etc...

Mums friend had a Trident U136 in Blue, she was so chuffed showing mum & me what it did, and couldnt believe how clean the paper bags made emptying!!!

Simon would love to se pics of the challenge, nice one to have for your collection!!!

Heres the Z100

55

The beige 55 shown in the croc skin is the 1 we had. We didnt have that small floor brush but we did have the big 1. Our pipes were the more modern lighter dull ones, but the hose handle was shiny and heavy. We had a beige rubber crevice, (my Nan had a dark grey rubber crevice tool with her 1951 z48, purchased the same year as our 55) but the rug noz shown is the same as ours was and the dusting brush, but we also had a black upholstry tool. The hose was exactly the same but broke by the handle quite early in its life, my dad complained and they sent him a replacement in turquoise and much more flexible with dull light chrome handle which now matched the pipes! meanwhile, my dad fixed the broken origional and it was rolled up and thrown in the back of a cupboard for a spare. when we eventually came to use it,(i think to give my aunt for her 65 it was too stiff to use!!!)

Z55

But yes that was our model 55 in that same skin, same colour with the silver ittalic sloping electrolux logos. bought in 1951 at co op stores Dudley ,West midlands. I think it came in a cardboard box , mind. It ran till 1984 and to quote my mother " worth every penny, the best £28 i ever spent"

Hi again:

Love all the information - Its really filling in the gaps.

Si - The Challenge is a really sharp looking machine. Did they make the parts in the red or the ivory?

Mike - I've seen the Australian machine before but what is the model number for it? We had a similar one (see below) and it was a Z54. We had three machines out at that time (1953-57). The standard machine ZB55-blue/black, the delux machine Z57-tan/brown and the cheap version Z54-blue/red. I've included a pic of the Z54 here
