Electrolux Grand Marquis Automatic Control Selector

Hi, I have went through our archives and found an extension explanation on how the automatic control works for the model lx up until the last all metal bodied Electrolux 1521's. I have a Commemorative Edition Electrolux with 4 Control settings.

1, 2 , 3 (normal) & 4. Here is what the manual says. Each time you clean, adjust the control dial to your cleaning need. 1 or 2 when vacuuming fuzz, animal hair, thread, crumbs, larger particles of dirt, gravel, etc. Set to normal for ordinary household dirt, sand, and dust. Set the selector to 4 when cleaning attic, cellar floor, ashes, soot, or plaster dust or other fine particles.

Ok so my question is this. Which one of these settings will trigger the bag change first? 1,2,3 or 4? I want to maintain my Commemorative Edition so that the bag does not get overfilled and put strain on the motor. Also I would never use this vacuum in my garage and I don't have a basement, I have one level with wood, ceramic tile, and carpeted floors.

The lower the number, the sooner it will shut off. So, if you keep it on one, it will shut off and open sooner than the higher numbers. I must admit though zthat even on one it takes a while for it to have enough dirt to open, and I've never had the patience to wait all that long. Those bags get to smelling once they sit for a couple of weeks. I love your commemorative edition, btw. It's my favorite modern lux... Well, that one, and the blue ultralux classic.

On my 1205...

I just put it in the middle. Considering that it is an Electrolux you have nothing to worry about with regard to motor strain. Set it to the middle and adjust from their. For example if you have dogs and the bag fills up too much with hair before tripping the door just lower the setting a bit.

I use the Perfect hepa bags and on 1 it takes a while!

I set both my Electrolux's on fine dirt. I've never run either on the same bag long enough to pop open the door.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I actually had my Electrolux set on 4 originally and after reading these archives, changed it to 1 after your confirmation). I also recently did buy a blue Electrolux Grand Marquis, which when I got the instructions with it made me question my setting and therefore ask about the Automatic Control setting. I changed my setting to 1, so I will not stuff the bag full, before changing. Type C bags are not that expensive. DVC makes a top quality 4 ply filter bag, you can also buy them in bulk, up to a case of 100 for under $40.00. There was a time, that I would never and I mean never, use anything but a genuine bag, but Aerus changed their 4 ply to a two ply, which states that it filters better than the original 4 ply. (NOT). Now when I do buy a new Lux Legacy (I really like the 90th anniversary color), I will definitely use Genuine Bags so as not to void the warranty.....Aerus still needs to fix there bag problem or go to the material they use on the Lux Guardian Platinum model.......Just my 2 cents.

It was explained to me by a longtime serviceman in this way. The old 6-position selector worked the best. Setting it to 1 opened the door at 10% suction loss. 2 would be 20% loss, and so forth. The Sensor became touchier with the 1521 series. I always kept mine on 4 because it was incredibly touchy. Doesn't help me now, I sold my Diamond J.

Like several others who have responded, I've never had one fill up enough to pop the door. I usually just change the bag when I have a noticeable suction loss.

At one point Aerus stopped making its own bags. I don't know if it began in 1994 with the Iota bags or after. Home Care Industries, Inc. of La Crosse, VA manufactured its Germ Grabber brand beginning in 1998 and the later Sure Thing brand. SourceOne Plus, Inc. of Crystal Lake, IL was the original manufacturer of the Home Solutions brand beginning in January 2013 with the introduction of the Lux Guardian Platinum. In June 2014 Aerus ended its contract with SOP, but I don't know who manufactures the current HS bags. I'm guessing that Aerus reintroduced the 2-ply bags* when the present company took over production.

*From what I can surmise 2-ply bags were available with the Model LX. Its manual referred to both wrappers (single-ply) and FILTER wrappers "to meet such conditions in some localities where fine powdery dirt prevails ..." (although they may have been 3- or 4-plied). 4-ply bags became the standard when the Model E was launched or shortly after (my 1955 manual mentions them). It should be noted, too, that after-filters were also used at the time.

The Germ Grabber bags seem to be of high quality, similar to the genuine Electrolux ones; never had either kind break on me. Just last week I was at a thrift store and saw a brand new sealed 12-pack of the germ grabbers, so I "grabbed" them up for $4!

Thanks, I do also buy NOS genuine 4 ply bags and have Germgrabber and Surething bags that are in my machines. I gave a friend an Electrolux 2100 that I used to have. He has two kitties, one long haired and one short haired. Bags only last a few weeks, due to the amount of cat hair and kitty litter tracked out even with mats in front of each of the covered litter boxes (3). That is why I tried the DVC brand bags and found that they do filter very well. I usually change the bags for him when the automatic control signals a bag change. That is how I know they filter so well, very little dust in the bag compartment. I would not be afraid to use the 4 ply DVC's in my Electrolux vacuums. I wrote about the Aerus bags in detail in a post some time back, noting that their new two ply that they toot to be better than the original 4 ply was not better at filtering. Note: The 2 ply instead of 4 does not hold up well, the 2nd inner layer pulls away and tears away and rips from the outer bag, putting you down to 1 layer filtration.....I haven't bought any since. When I do buy a new machine, I will use the genuine, just to protect my warranty....hopefully they have addressed this problem by now.....I will say this, they did ask me to send them a bag to show them what was happening, which I did. They gave it to research and development to look at. I never received a response back, but did receive a brand new box of C bags at no charge for my effort.

I am a die hard Electrolux fan, no bashing here, just the facts as I know them up to this point. PS This was a few years ago and as I have said, my fix was to buy NOS 4 ply bags.

I've always used the third-party "Multi-Filter" 4-ply bags. They're offer an excellent price-to-quality ratio.

I used to use DVC bags and was also satisfied with their performance. I even managed to get a bunch at a secondhand store for cheap. Then I listened to an Aerus rep who convinced me that the seal on aftermarket brands wasn't as good as the "genuine" ones, so I donated my DVC bags back to the store and spent more money buying some Home Solution ones on eBay.
