Need some advise on my P1 Electrolux power nozzle motor:
Background-this was my grandmother's Electrolux. It is over 41 years old. The tank and power nozzle sound great.
Problem: The power nozzle motor gets quite hot after only a few minutes use. It sounds correct and runs very quiet. No problem with the belt or brush revolutions.
Any ideas what the problem could be with the motor?
I took the top cover off and watched it run. Everything seems ok but when the cover is on it gets quite hot after only a few minutes use.
Quite shocking to see how well built machines were years ago! This was used almost every for over 30 years. Quite different construction from my new plastic Hoovers and Dysons.

Interesting note:
I just aquired this machine. I had not seen it for 41 years. I sold this machine new to my grandparents in summer of 1968. The paperwork says it was $109.95 for machine and $49.95 for power nozzle. If you use the inflation calulator that Electrolux would cost $1016.15 in todays money! No wonder they took such good care of their Electrolux. They bought the model L because it was less money and lighter weight than the 1205.
Another interesting thing was that the inside of the machine was clean as new. She always used genuine Electrolux bags.

Speaking of Turquoise Electrolux Model Ls.......

A few years ago my mom was complaining about "the new sweeper that Daddy got" at a local vac shop. I don't remember now exactly what it was, but it was a "cheap plastic canister" of some sort. She said it was noisy, heavy, hard to use, and didn't pick up very well. She said she was going to have Daddy take it back and get something else.

Well, it just so happened that I had a really nice turquoise Electrolux Model L that I had found at a thrift store and had kept because it was in such beautiful condition, but I never used it.

So I told her not to have Daddy get her another vacuum cleaner, but to watch for the UPS man in a few days.

So I boxed up the Model L and send it off. A couple weeks later she called me and said in a sing-song voice, "Oh, Santa Claus came early and sent us a new Eee-leck-tro-luxe!" I just love it and will enjoy using it!"

I had made up a custom instruction manual for them which you can see at the link. (Note regarding "Precious Treasure" ... that was what my Mama called me from the time they brought me home from the hospital! To this day I sign my cards and letters "PT.")

A couple weeks ago Mama sent me an email saying the Electrolux had stopped running -- wasn't getting any power at all. My first suspicion was the cord, so I told her to try a different one. She did, still no power. So Daddy took it to a local vac shop. After a few days the man called and said, in Mama's words:

"Two clips had disintegrated, that connected the wires to the motor (if I understood him right), and he was having trouble finding replacements, due to the age of the machine. He said it wouldn't be expensive to fix, he just has to locate the replacement parts. He had several inquiries out. I'll let you know when we hear from him. Too bad you don't have all those Electrolux's to get parts from, anymore!"

I replied back:

"Yeah really... I had a stack of about a dozen motors from that exact model. Oh well. No use crying over spilled sweepers I guess... Well, I'm glad it wasn't anything serious. But if he calls back and says he can't find the parts for it and starts talking about wanting to replace the motor, politely decline unless he quotes a very low price for it -- like, $25 or less. I am sure I can find a replacement motor for you from one of my collector friends and, believe it or not, it's a snap to replace. Daddy would have it done in about 5 minutes."

Soooooo... Has anyone ever run into this problem? How could copper clips "disintegrate?"

That was a great story. That is exactly the way my mom's family pronounced Eee-leck-tro-luxe!
My grandmother has been gone since 1998 but my Aunt had saved a few of her things and her Electrolux along with her Rid-Jid sit down ironing board were among them. The only thing worn out on the machine was the roller brush. This was back in the day when people took great pride in their housekeeping.
This a was "REAL" hard sale because my grandmother had a Hoover 28. She was quite amazed when I started pulling dirt pads from her heavy Firth wool living room carpet. Then I went to the dining room and her bedroom had a room size hooked rug. THEN I started on the furniture. She and my grandfather were both standing when I finished . I had dirt pads on all the furniture.She just could not believe that I was getting all that grit from her rug.
Can you imagine what I could pull from homes today the way people keep house ! Loved your story Charlie. I know my grandmother always thought about me every time she used her Eee-leck-tro-lux over the next 35 years. She NEVER got over how much dirt her Hoover left in her carpet. I hope I can find the answer to why the power nozzle is getting hot.

The PN motor running hot

Remove the motor and take it apart,see if the fields are clogged with dirt.Blow out the dust and your motor should run cooler.

Thanks Richard. I can sure remove the top and blow dust out. Not sure I would have knowledge to take the motor out or apart. I appreciate your help. I just cannot believe how well constructed these older appliances seem to be compared to my newer machines. Can you imagine a new plastic machine with a plastic chasis lasting 41 years and still performing.
If I need to go further I will seek a club member who has the "know how".
My old Hoover's and Lux's sure didn't require stiff,plastic brushes to clean the rug. I was looking at the brushes on my old Hoover 28 and Hoover 63. They are really quite gentle and soft to the touch.

Enjoyed reading the manual, you made for your parent's. Looks as if the manual was created on an older Macintosh. I recognized the font Geneva. I still use a Power Macintosh G3 with OS 9.2.2 on a regular basis for a quick letter, etc. The older systems were so easy to use. And no I have never had any problems with the copper clips although I haven't had my machines a long time.

Rob, what a beautiful machine! How lucky you are to have it with such special memories. You just have to love a machine like this, Clean lines, very basic, and does just what it was designed to do. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Actually....

The belt is probably too tight. Loosen the screws holding the motor and slide the motor back and forth. Place a thumb on the belt and pull the motor back till it is tightly holding the belt. The belt should have a tiny bit of slack in it so that the motor will not run hot.

Because of the cog size on the belt, the Electrolux PN motor has to be manually adjusted when you install it. They later took care of this problem by putting in a different style housing on the later PN's made after the PN6.
