My grey Electrolux Epic 6500SR makes a HUGE racket & has VERY little suction. Even after putting in a new bag & removing the exhaust filter (which needs to be replaced) the Epic 6500SR still has barely any suction. What could be the problem? Do I need to take apart the motor or should I replace it with a new motor?

btw, the test was done before the spa treatment

fans or bearings

Sounds to me that either the fans have been damaged or stripped out, or the bearings have gone out. Either would cause low suction and a lot of noise. I would recomend a new motor, much easier than repairing and old one and will last longer than a rebuild.

What Seth said. The only way to repair that is to replace the motor. Unless you are experienced, its a fairly difficult repair.

those guys are right.

The motor is shot, but your hose is like new,I am selling several electrolux motor units that have been cleaned and run like new make me a except able offer perhaps I can sell you something.

After removing the exhaust filter & changing the bag, I tried to unclog the hose & it was fully stuffed with lint & pet hair. I filled up 2 bags full of dirt that backed up into the hose.

For now, I'm using the Epic 6500SR without the exhaust filter until I put in a new motor & finish cleaning up the vacuum.

Now it seems like the Epic has more suction now; but I still think it's time for a motor replacement.

Why won't the Epic 6500's bag door open when the bag is full? The models G, 1205 & Super J always automatically opened the door when the bag is full; the G has a more sensitive Automatic Control.

Is this normal for the Epic 6500SR to turn off when I cover the suction port when its running?

Now that I put in a "new" motor; the vac won't turn on. The temperature light turns on; why is this happening?

btw, the motor works good; I removed it from a TriStar EXL, which is identical to the Epic 6500 motor.[this post was last edited: 4/19/2013-09:05]

Sounds like you didn't put the motor in correctly. Did you order a brand new motor or a "new to you" motor? Also, did you wire it properly? Those things are a b*tch to wire if you didn't write them on the back motor shroud.

It looks like it had been repaired before; the color letter code ("W" for White, "1B" for one black wire "2B" for two black wires, "R" for Red, etc) already were written on the motor shroud when I opened the unit. I didn't remove any wires from the switch area; just from the motor shroud aeea only.

As for the wires on the motor itself, I hope they are wired correctly?

Make sure the safety sensor inside of the motor is not bad- sometimes they can act screwy when repairing the machine. The temperature light is an indication of overheating while running the machine, or wiring incorrectly while putting the machine back together.

The PN electrical current runs OK; maybe the vacuum motor gave out? I had everything wired correctly; the thermostat light still on but the PN is running when connected to the vacuum.

Now the motor was shooting sparks!

What motor should I get for the Epic? I'm thinking about the Ametek #115923 high-performance motor, but the original motor had 3 connectors (2 black wires & 1 white wire with red short wire on a square piece) What does the square piece do?[this post was last edited: 4/19/2013-16:19]

The square piece is a little thermal piece to protect the motor. We normally bypass those when replacing the motor.

The new motor finally arrived; but it only has 2 wires/connectors instead of 3 wires/connectors like the original motor. Is there a way the motor wiring connection can be modified for 2 wires?

Notice that the connections are for 3 wires; this pic shows the unit with the old motor.

After a while trying to figure out why the Epic 6500SR didn't work, I re-wired the motor correctky this time & now it works good. The "new" motor gave new life & more suction to my Epic 6500SR.

Only one problem is the SideKick 2 runs intermittently when I hold the hose handle & SideKick upside-down or sideways. I even used another SideKick 2 & the problem still exists. Could the switch on hose handle have gone bad or has the hose handle wiring gone bad?
