No idea if this should be in Contemporary or not, but here's an Electrolux 1453 I picked up today, in pretty good shape, with the original hose, wands, and combo floor/rug nozzle. This is a cute little machine, and appears to work well. Other than that, I'll admit I know nothing about it. I'm guessing it was the bottom of the line model with the Olympia (?)

Heard but never tried...

Likewise. I may have seen a few posts on this forum about it, but this is my first time seeing one. I think the old boy will look pretty good once shined up.

re

yeah Bob i think it well be nice when it is all shine up and i seen one with power nozzle on you tube.

yep this machine was the bottom of the line machine as it did not feature the cord winder, Suction Dial, and rocker switch. still a very good quality machine though.

This one doesn't have an electric hose and PN, but the contacts are there in the hose connector. Once its cleaned up, this will mostly see bare floor and dusting duty, and I'm sure it has more than enough power to do that.

To tell the truth, even though the automatic shutoff is a defining feature of Electrolux, I rarely if ever pay attention to it, but change bags manually, so a non-automatic machine is as good to me as an automatic one.

There is Something

Very elegant about these BOL Electroluxes. They have all the quality of Electrolux in a basic machine. I must admit, the L is still one of my favorites. Basic, but does the job superbly. That's the L off to the left.

Elegance

Agreed completely. I have a Model E and even though it has no flourishes whatsoever, there's something I like about it, just like this 1453...almost like "the little vacuum that could", or something like that. The contemporary Canadian BOL models didn't look that different from the TOLs, so there wasn't a sense you were getting something radically different (but still good).

BTW, is the Electrolux logo on the 1453 bumper strip supposed to be black? I scanned the archives, and every picture of this machine showed a black logo, but on mine, its completely white, and doesn't even show any trace of the black having rubbed off. It's nothing that a Sharpie won't fix, but I want to make sure before doing it.

I always liked seeing the differences between the BOL and TOL machines. This body on this machine looks way different than the body on the top of the line Olympia. Did they make two different bodys for them?

Sweet vac by the way Bob, I have that same hose but with an AP fitting at the end of it. Its for the SAP.

Body Talk

The main case, rear wheels, and front caster assembly appear to be identical with the Olympia, or at least with the Golden Jubilee/Super J, and I assume the Olympia is the same as those. The front cover and top "deck" are of course different.

Speaking of that hose, was just thinking it would look pretty good on the brown Model G as well.

1453 In Gray

I just bought a gray body, 1453. That was the budget model with the Silverado. I really like it a lot. As it is so much easier to pull and turn corners than the big, Models. Has more then enought power and all the advantages, without the weight factor. Especially when cleaning steps.
I had a brand new brown 1453 back in 1979, added a cord rewinder at a later date. Sort of bogged it down from ease of use. Originally bought it with the electric hose and Power Nozzel. It seems like it was, $175.00, then plus the electric hose and
power nozzle, another 100.00 or 125.00. So later on bought the cord rewind. It was about $50.00.

I'd like to see some pictures of the silver 1453; I believe there's a thread about it in the archives somewhere. As far as cord winders go, if a machine doesn't have one, I'd prefer the cord to detach from the machine completely, like the XXX etc, so you can put the cord away somewhere. With this one, there's nowhere sensible to put it except coiled on top of the machine.

Wish i had some pics of it,but i had a gray (Silverado) BOL identical to the one pictured except that mine had a heavy plastic square shaped donut on the back to wind the cord on.
The donut is Shaped the same as the rear end of a Golden J, Olympia, Silverado, ect. I can see where the added cord winder would make the Lux harder to use.
Gave this machine to my folks to use in their winter home in South Tex. Dad does all the vacuuming,,says he likes it because its lighter weight than a regular Lux,great for cleaning out the car, and loves the blower feature,(lots of sand/beaches where they live) and, still has the power of a regular Lux.
I had a former Lux salesman tell me once that they didnt like to and normally didnt demo this model too often because they were alot cheaper than a regular Lux. They would only show this model if the customer absolutely refused to consider buying an Electrolux,, they would try to sell one of these as a last resort.
These really are excellent vacs,,a basic Electrolux and MUCH lighter weight than its counterpart. I was always amazed at how light that little Silverado was compared to a regular Silverado.

BTW Compactelectra,,i LOVE that pic of your Model L,,Polisher (were they called a B8?) and 1205. They are beautiful.
An older neighbor lady bought a brand new 1205 in 1974 when i was a kid. I was in total AWE.
The salesman put it together for her,,or at least just sold her the one he was showing her. I got there just after he left. I got to use it for a little while,,but not too long,,she didnt want any dumb kid to ruin her new Electrolux!
I dreamed of that machine for yrs afterward,(my parents would NEVER have bought anything like that, all we had was a dumb old Hoover connie that i HATED!),that 1205 was just so beautiful brand new. Reminds me of yours!
A yr or 2 later my Grandma bought a brand new Golden J,,so all hope was not lost. haha

Weight

That's really the only serious "problem" I have with a lot of the American models; the weight. The Canadian contemporaries are noticeably lighter, even the metal ones, with the notable exception of the Model E.

I was just thinking of the various machines I've gotten since Christmas, and weight and/or maneuverability was a factor in the seller getting rid of them, in a few cases. In other cases, it was "We don't have carpet anymore", and/or "We just bought this new Bissell/Shark/Dirt Devil/etc". A small sample, no doubt, but I bet these "symptoms" are repeated over and over.

Cords on 1453 and what to do with them !

I have always done the lazy mans thing with the cord on my 1453. Just coycle it in my hand like some folks do for the "top Hook only" on uprights. Then I pull the top of the coycled cord up thru the back side of handle. It's easy to store and the easy to get at the next time.

I'll try to send a picture of my Gray 1453 after I get home this eve.

This is all I've done with mine so far. Very untidy for an Electrolux, but nothing's perfect :) At least it has that rubber strap on the plug end to keep it together.

Looking forward to seeing pictures of the silver 1453.
