Eggnog, anyone?

I'm a massive fan

My favorite is easily Borden's Old Fashion (it used to be the regular or only eggnog from them but changed), then Southern Comfort regular and vanilla spice, Braham's eggnog (ice cream store in the South).

I've tried to make dairy free versions and have never liked the outomes....part of the reason is taste and the other is thinness....aka the viscosity. But, I have found a solution....adding very small amounts of Xanthum gum....then blending and adding more...until you reach the thickness you prefer. If too much is added, it'll turn into a pudding!!

I love eggnog (the premixed alcoholic kind) but has too much fat for be to enjoy much of.
The Bordon one is also good if I want a smaller container or no alcohol.
I have a bottle of pumpkin-nog that I will be opening soon for Thanksgiving - never had that before...
 
My grandmother used to make it from scratch--very thick and rich--with rye whiskey in it. Don't ask me why rye, but she always insisted on that, even though she always had plenty of bourbon in the house. She would send my grandfather to the liquor store for a pint of rye to use in the mix.

As far as pre-made eggnog goes, I really miss Pine State. It was a local dairy in North Carolina that got busted in a bid rigging scandal for school cafeteria contracts in the late '80s and went out of business shortly thereafter. I was never concerned about the pre-packaged ones being non-alcoholic because I can easily remedy that, if I wish. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.

without alcohol.Some people might add a little 'something' to it. I've never tasted alcohol, ever. No, I DON'T have a 'problem', although, I believe some have thought I do, because I don't drink. But, that's not it.
Perhaps I'll put a recipe for it in the VCCC Christmas newsletter!
 
I sleep so soundly

during the holidays because I like to end the day with an egg nog night cap. I like to ad a shot of Captain Morgans spiced rum to the egg nog and a pinch of nutmeg on top. I prefer the rich gourmet eggnog's like Southern Comfort. My parent's used to make Tom&Jerry's from the batter you can purchase most places. It's served hot. My step-mom would make up a batch of Hot Buttered Rum about 6 weeks before the holidays and store it in a dark place. Hot apple cider with or without alcohol and cinnamon sticks and a slice of orange on top. Tip: That Tom&Jerrys batter I spoke of makes an excellent rub for cooking a ham, you're welcome!

I'll still make the regular egg nog.....I'll entertain a lot over the holidays. I'll make home made hot chocolate, egg nog, iced tea (of course), as well as loads (hundreds) of various cookies, banana nut bread, zucchini bread, Irish soda bread, brownies, and assorted cakes, in addition to Italian cannoli(s)For a guy who lives alone, this house swings at Christmastime.

eggnog pancakes and waffles.Eggnog salt water taffies can be found this time of year. I've been told that the dairies make only one batch a year, after that's gone.... I sent an email to one of the local dairies thanking them for putting out such a good tasting nog, and I thought their regular was every bit as good as the gourmet brands that cost twice as much. They sent me a letter thanking me, and that they passed my email around in a meeting and sent me a 10.00 gift card which could be used for anything in the store where I purchased their products. It's nice to be nice!

drink, either? It is Hans, right? I've been seeing Han's.I want to be sure, there's no apostrophe in your name. My late father was from N Carolina (Roxborough). Sometimes the names are a bit different.
Have you been ridiculed for not imbibing? Some people thrive on that stuff.
Well, as you know, that little beverage can be enjoyed in many ways.

I found several recipes

some call for alcohol. You can ALWAYS add it to any of them. Some add it to everything they can find...rum and Coke? etc......
Some require cooking, some don't. Some are hesitant to consume raw eggs, etc.
Some aren't afraid at all. I've made 2 different types.
I'll be bringing some to Sam's mini meet in December.
I hope everyone enjoys it. If not. well, then more for the rest.

I don't know where the hyphen came from, I grew up with a Daddy who drank almost every weekend, What you might say a functioning alcoholic I never saw the need to act like he did, And No No one has EVER made fun of me for not drinking.Certainly none of my friends..
 
Well, Hans, you're certainly lucky

on several levels. First, you never got caught in the trap of alcoholism, you survived a childhood of it, and.... you have friends who don't make fun of you. They wouldn't be considered friends, then would they? They could be called many other, different things. My friends don't, either. They are nice, polite, and caring. I'm fortunate, too.
 
Remember from college days---my brother had me over at his place for the weekend-was around time for the holidays.Since he knew I loved eggnog he fixed up a batch of the "spiked" stuff!Didn't tell me and said to drink as much as I wanted!Woke up the next day in bed with a log splitter headache!!No more of the spiked stuff for me!
Another kind of eggnog I use in the Simply Creamery kind-DELICIOUS-since its not spiked can really indulge!!!The bottles or cartons have the easily recognized cow face on them!
 
I know my mom used to make it when I was very young.
She didn't have a written recipe, and she doesn't remember how she made it.
It wasn't thick like the kind you buy in the carton, but I remember that I loved the flavor of it.
It was made even more special by the fact that she served it in those classic little egg nog mugs.
Everyone has probably seen them. They look like a Fire King type of material, with green and red vintagey images on them, and the words "Egg nog" in a sort of calligraphy font.
We always buy some in the carton this time of year.
Being in New England, we generally buy Hood brand.
It's very sweet and tasty. But, as others have said, the sugar and calorie count make it best consumed in small quantities.

I've seen those mugs.

WE never had them. I do remember my mom making it in a special mixer and serving it in special glasses. It's funny the things we remember. We'd drink it with our "Evergleam" 6' aluminum tree in the livingroom.
We never had the color wheel. I still have that tree, and, it goes up in one of the rooms here at Xmas.
Memories........................
I alsp use 1% milk, so it's not TOO bad.
