Early Electrolux Up Right and Canister

Tank model

That's a very nice looking example of a Diamond Jubilee Electrolux canister/tank vacuum. From best I can tell it has its original braided hose, but appears to be missing the dusting brush, crevice tool, and possibly a Sidekick I (not too sure if they came with the DJ model or not). The Diamond Jubilee, if memory serves, came out around 1984 and had essentially the same motor as the Olympia One and Silverado, although I have heard stories about their motors not being as reliable as the Silverado!

The upright appears to be one of Electrolux's first upright. I want to say it dates back to the late 70's around the time of the Super J....but don't quote me on that as I am by no means an expert (well I'm no expert on anything) but especially the lux uprights! I hope that helps a little though.

Love

the 1521 canister, I have the Ultralux LX, which is the same as the DJ/Grand Marquise/etc. I'm having motor troubles with it right now, but it's still a good cleaner.

As for the upright, that is Electrolux's first upright, the Heavy Duty Automatic. I've never used one before, but they look and sound really freaking cool. (check out my link to see one in action.)

How much are they asking for the upright?

I had two of those uprights.

They were very cool IMHO and they had a features that no one else was doing at the time. For example, the carpet height adjuster would raise or lower all four wheels so that means that the suction opening sat at a perfect 90 degree angle on the carpet. The brushroll protection used a belt and clutch assembly that operates much in the same way as the Dyson DC 07. It would protect the belt and the machine, but it would make one heck of a racket so you always knew if you had something caught in the brush. On my machines the handle release was button controlled and it also had a lock out feature so that the handle would move up and down freely.

The only problem I ever had with this machine was that it clogged easily. The airway path was sooooo narrow that things were always getting stuck in it. They machines even came with a built in ram rod to help push the clogged material through.

Tank: Diamond J/Model 1521--the first in the 1521 series--which marked the redesign of the earlier 1205-era design. It did, indeed, debut in 1984, which was Electrolux Corporation's 60th anniversary (the original company, AB Electrolux of Sweden, goes back further). The colors are known as sand and jade (dark green). The sand-colored power nozzle was either a 'PN-5B' or the second version of the PN-5 (black hood). Around 1986 DJs were paired with the jade-colored PN-6.

The 1521s also included the:

Marquise w/PN-6A (or PN-7?) - 1987-88 (taupe/sand)
Grand Marquise w/PN 6A (or PN-7?) - 1988-89 (lt. sand/navy)
Legacy w/PN-1684 - 1989-90 (lt. sand/navy)
Ultralux, w/PN-1684 - 1990-91 (lt. sand/navy)
Ultralux LX w/lighted PN-1683 - 1991-92 (navy/lt. sand w/chrome top)
Ultralux Classic, w lighted PN-1693 - 1992-1994 (navy/lt. sand w/chrome top)

All use the classic 'Style C' bags (introduced in 1952) which are still available through Aerus/Electrolux. Power nozzle brushes are still available.

Upright: Model 1451E sand/jade (1984-86) It was the last of Electrolux's original series of uprights. Even though some say 'heavy duty', later ones do also; so I refrain from calling the the 'heavy-duty' series.

Others in the series include the:

Model 1363 - 1977-78 (golden yellow/white)
Model 1363 - 1978-79 (tan/brown)
Model 1451 - 1979-80 (tan/brown/orange)
Model 1451E - 1980-82 (tan/brown/orange)
Model 1451E - 1982-84 (2-tone gray)

They take a different bag (that have been discontinued by Aerus/Electrolux) than the L-shaped uprights that succeeded them (1986 - present) . I would imagine that OEM brushes are no longer available through Aerus but don't know if aftermarkets are.

Brushroll options for the upright

I remember there were several different brushrolls available for the upright, including one with long stiff bristles for low pile industrial carpet, also one with a beater bar strip.

Thanks for mentioning the different types of available brush rolls.

Corrections:

"The sand-colored power nozzle was either a 'PN-5B' or the second version of the PN-5 (black hood)."

Should read:

The sand-colored power nozzle was either a 'PN-5' or the second version of the PN-5 (which had a black hood).

"Even though some say 'heavy duty', later ones do also; so I refrain from calling the the 'heavy-duty' series."

Should read (with additions):

Even though some in the series are labeled 'heavy duty', later "L" shaped ones are too; so I refrain from using 'heavy duty' to describe the entire series. 'Rectangular hooded uprights' would be more accurate.

Electrolux

Looks like nice vacs above.Would be typical to have some suction loss from older braided hose.If so would be easily replaced.
Also-Canister--All Olympia and early Silverado motors were same with continuous improvements. Then later Silverado and Diamond Jubilee had same motor that that could have bearing and armature problems until it to was greatly improved. The Sidekick was introduced after first DJ and Discovery. Was optional or could be added to previous models.Soon standard on deluxe canister and upright.
Upright--The belt/clutch seen on the Dyson upright is the closest we have seen to the original Elux upright but the Elux used 2 gear belts that almost NEVER have problems while the Dyson has smooth belts that ALWAYS stretch and wear with large repair bill to follow. There was also a 3 wire commercial Elux upright with longer cord and spacer at upper cord hook to hold it.

Wow..

.
thanks for the great info. I just got a slug of 5 vacs hitting my favorite spots for the first time in months.
These are going to have to get stupid cheap for me to jump. The upright is a long drive...a jade canister sounds cool, and it is close, so if that one come down to $15 i will nab it.
