Rolls_rapide: Dyson have just got back to me. I left a message at 9.30pm on Saturday, they couldn't answer immediately because the appropriate member of staff had gone home, but he got back to me at 8.30am on Monday.

With regards to the DC11, I'm told that Dyson have enough in stock to offer it on the website again. He suggests that a number of them have been returned (ie. brand new and unopened, from various stockists' warehouses) that Dyson can offer them on the website until the stock is depleted. The stores returning the stock would rather use the space to store and sell the better models which have superceded the DC11, which is no longer in production.

As for the DC15, that IS still in production. I was surprised, and I asked what the incentive for the buyer is to purchase the 15 over the 25. He suggested the 15's larger bin capacity and slightly longer cord, but said otherwise they were very similar. He said he'd strongly advise that the DC25 was the better machine, and that the DC15 was noticably heavier.

I personally can't see the need for the DC15 now, it seems obsolete to me, but clearly Dyson think otherwise!

Anyway, hope that helped!

And here's the sound-comparison video I promised. The test-cleaner is my Dyson DC07 Origin, bought brand new in December 2008.

- The yellow-topped cyclone assembly is the one which came with the cleaner.

- The red-topped one comes from my older DC07 Low Reach +HEPA.

Aside from the colours, at a glance, they both look identical, but see what difference in sound the 2 different Root8-cyclone designs make? For the record, both are in perfect working order, and have always sounded like that.

Jack

Thanks for getting feedback from Dyson, I had presumed the DC11 in particular to be 'dead' - obviously old stock that has been returned to Dyson.

With regard to the DC07's noise, what bothered me on my machine (an early 'All Floors' model - dull grey and turquoise), was the high-pitched whistle. It seems to be audible in your video when neither cyclone pack is fitted.

As for differences in sound between the two cyclone packs, check the 'vortex finders' of the small cyclones. The original vortex finders were designed like propellers of a World War I biplane, though fixed in place.

The later vortex finders may have simpler single fins (ala DC14, DC15), or possibly star-shaped vortex finder tubes like DC11.

DC07s as you probably know, had a poor design that allowed the fine dust to build up in the region of the small cyclones, effectively blocking the cleaner. Are both yours free of this build up?

Yup, both are clean and clear! At least, I know the red-top is because I took it apart to check before I did the video, and the yellow-top has sounded like that since I took it out of the box brand new.

Another major Dyson fan here! :) I had the very first DA001, the books, bits and pieces… :) At the moment, I only have a DC03, having sold my others to relatives and neighbours. If I had the room, I would have many more Dysons! :)

Very nice pictures, and the video is great, Jack! :) I was really surprised by the difference in sound.

I have to agree that, despite my hypersensitivity to noise, Dysons are not extremely noisy, though it would be nice if they could be a little quieter. Your video demonstrates that there are clear differences even with the same model!

Noise is a subjective thing, as there are various issues involved in the perception of sound. Apart from volume (dB), there is pitch and allsorts of other factors that can influence our perception of sound as ‘nice’ or otherwise. Even some quiet sounds at an unpleasant frequency can be irritating to some. Hard disks can be irritating to some despite being relatively quiet, as the idle noise of some hard disks exhibit a high-pitched sound.

I know this is a long shot, and I’ve spoken to you about this at length on MSN, Jack, but I really, really want to find the quietest Dyson possible. Upright or cylinder, I don’t mind. :) How loud something is is important, but the pitch of some Dysons goes right through me. The DC07 Allergy and DC08 we had were classic examples. I know some really do not like the sound produced by the DC03, but it’s not too noisy, though it has a certain high pitch to it. So far, it’s the best I can get in terms of loudness/pitch balance. :)

I can be found on MSN if anyone would like to chat. :) Just add my e-mail address (found on my profile here). :)

I agree that it would be nice if they were quieter but if it sacrificed performance I wouldn't want the noise changed.

How about the regal roar...

... of a Hoover Senior 612. I can't remember any irritating sounds coming from it.

Come to think of it, Electrolux uprights (500 series and 600 series) were quietly efficient too.
