DS50 Wiring

The d50 I am restoring has had the safety switch removed and wired to high. I have a proper d50 safety switch, but I am not sure where it is. Until I find it, is there any way to wire it to low so I don't overloda the motor with the roller? Pic 4 is the top brush cap and pic 3 is the bottom. Thanks!

Unfortunately,

There is no safety switch, it was removed by the same vac shop that trimmed it in red and spray painted it silver(ugh)! I got the correct 2 speed switch in a lot a few years ago, I just need to find it.

Perhaps

There are 4 wires that go to the safety switch. I believe green white red yellow.
Green from the coil and white from the coil cap each one and don't use there for high speed.
You have red and yellow from the coil. There is black and white from light. The carbon brush caps have green and black.
The power switch has w w w b b b g g g.
Black coil, black headlight and red coil go in bbbb slots. Yellow from coil and white from headlight go to w w slots. The green goes on the g.
If this doesn't work pigtail green from coil and from carbon brush out and put in g on switch.
When you get switch green and white from coil go to safety switch for high speed.

Well,

It looks like I have the wrong power switch! It
must have been replaced when it was trimmed in red. It only has two screw on terminals on it. Also, it matches the switch on my 516. In that case I will leave it like this until I can get an original. Thanks for your help!

All the b connect make a pigtail. W do the same so you have 3 pigtails a black aka power white aka neutral green aka ground or not labeled just a copper screw on the side.

I do hope someone here has a proper D50/80 wiring diagram (meaning official Kirby service literature from ca. 1968). All I have is an equivalent one for the Classic 1CR.

Will do. After using it for a few minutes, it seems to be in low now (really needs grease) but I will replace the cut wires and pigtail them, just to be sure. Thanks!

Hey

Ben if you notice Ds's cr1 cb1 use same safety switch and same power switch. This wiring is exact same as sanitronic.
If you notice high and low. Keep them called and pigtail etc. Switches just turn on and off power. In and only in vacuums you can or could use any switch on any model. Switches don't have cutoff they regulate.

I think I can get this solved regarding the wire setup for your D50:
* All white (negative) wires go to the side terminal screw. In this case, that would include those for the headlight socket and field coil
* All positive (live; hot) wires go to the bottom terminal screw; in this case, including those for the black brush lead wire (to bottom carbon brush) and headlight socket
* The long white and green wires emerging from the field coil go straight to the speed switch; the shorter green wire goes to the top carbon brush (as seen in the 4th picture you show us).
* The red and yellow wires go straight to the speed switch.

The foot switch I see on your D50 (part no. 110563) was the original one from the factory, and was also used on the initial 1967-68 season production run of the D80 (those units whose serial numbers begin with the letter "A"). The D80 got a redesigned field coil in June 1968, and thus so did its power switch.
