Thanks, Jeff.

I could have been more clear in my initial post that in this month of beginnings I was constructing a timeline of each comany's first models that used standard grade disposable bags. I thought I'd read that Hoover introduced its upright throw-away bags with the Hoover 63. Was it actually the 61 in 1946?

The first Hoover with a disposable paper bag was in 1929. The models 60, 61, and 62 still used the same Hygienisac they did in 1929. It wasn't until the model 63 that Hoovrah went to the type C bag.

Oh, thanks, Tom. I'd misunderstood your reply in thread 327977 regarding Hoover’s infringement on Air-Way's patent; thinking it was prohibited from using the Hygienisac.

The Hoover Hygienisac was meant to be emptied out and reused a number of times, but you were instructed to dispose of it and replace it with a new paper bag at intervals. Hoover sold their replacement bags in cardboard boxes and sometimes in paper bags themselves. Just because you could reuse a bag doesn't mean you never have to replace it.

Don't forget the Electrolux C-A, which was introduced in 1961, or 62. It used a large version of the disposable bags for the model G. These bags fit inside the cloth bag.

The C-A was the only wet/dry Electrolux. C-A stood for 'Commercial Automatic.

re-usable and disposable aren't exactky the same

According the the actual Hoover archives/history/documents,

the 'Hygienesac', 1st paper bag, was in 1929. It was re-introduced in 1940 on the model 60 and continued on through the early 1950s on models 61,62.

The truly disposable bag was for a tank cleaner, model 41, produced in 1950, 3 years before model 63 in 1953.

We all know that Convertible, model 65, used the type C  bag.

Thanks, John.

Below is an interesting 1950 NYT article that mentions paper bags. An interesting side note is that it refers to two types of tank vacuum cleaners - horizontal and vertical - instead of distinguishing between tank and canister.

The NYT article…

Interesting it doesn’t mention Electrolux at all which was one of if not THE most popular cleaner at the time.

Also, look at the pricing for various machines and items. 40 cents per bag for disposable bags is mentioned. That’s quite costly by today’s standards. Vacuums were expensive items back then. By today’s standards we wouldn’t be flabbergasted at reading about those prices but if we were to compare those prices to the pricing of other common items back in 1950…we would realize just how astronomically expensive a vacuum cleaner was. But they also lasted a good long time because they were metal and virtually nothing was plastic. People likely only changed vacuums to get so,etching newer, more powerful, or improved, easier to use design, not because the old machines “broke down” and had to be replaced. This was certainly the case with my Grandmother who to my knowledge pretty much only had Electrolux canisters. The door to door salesman would try to convince her that the new model was better than her current one in some fashion to get her to buy a new one even though the current one likely worked just fine. And she would end up buying the new one and the old one got “traded in”.

People still do this to this day, thinking newer is better, could be easier to use or perform better.

This also makes us realize that vacuums have indeed gotten “cheaper” over time…not just in quality, but also price. If we can buy a basic upright for $100 today and it lasts 5-7 years.. that’s actually not bad for what you are paying in comparison to back in 1950.

Good points, Jo.

I used the inflation calculator and discovered that 40¢ in 1950 would be $4.86 in 2022 - a 1114.3% increase in 72 years.

Gimbel's 1961 Disposable Bags ad

Interestingly, the listing Electrolux bags includes models F and Auto F! It probably seemed to follow suit of the E and Auto E.

June 1961 prices inflated to December 2022:

$3.98 - $39.64

$2.98 - $29.68
