Hi, I am just about to get a Kirby now (either G6 or G4) and You know how when the airflow is restricted in a clean air vacuum, it overheats when the hose is blocked for example for a while. With the Kirby, if i were to block it and fill the bag till is cant suck anymore, will it overheat? what is the worst that will happen?
Cheers
Tayyab

Though a direct-air machine such as the Kirby is not dependent on the air-flow to cool the motor, I would suggest that stressing any machine to it's limits may have some ramifications, though I don't feel motor overheating would be as likely as say a canister or indirect air upright.

The Kirby will not overheat...

because it has a separate motor cooling fan. This cooling fan is located behind the main fan case and is dedicated to cooling the motor. There are small air vents on the left side of the motor housing that allow the cooling air to exit.

So no matter how full the bag is or even in the unlikely event of a clog and there is no suction, the motor will not overheat.

The Kirby is an extremely well engineered machine which is designed to last 50 years or longer. I've seen Kirby's that have been heavily abused for 20 years and were then brought back to like new performance just by replacing the bag, belt and brushroll.

As previously mentioned... Kirbys will not over heat.

My Sanitronic VII came to me completely filled with dust inside of the machine. It was a literal cake.

I just knew by the grooves in the dust that the machine had been used for years like this and yet it's probably one of my strongest Kirbys....

worst that could happen,

The Kirby would explode in a watery dust storm, of course!

You could pack the bag with Jell-O for all I care, that Kirby has construction that could stop a train, especially older models, like the Tradition or 557!

If the fan generates enough heat the fins on the fan will start folding over. I have seen several Sentrias do this, the fins just curl over, it seems to be from a restricted airflow such as using the inflator tool and building up back pressure.

I seriously doubt...

that the Sentria fans are melting as stated above. I have never heard of anything like this ever happening! The Sentria fan is made of Amodel which has a melting point of 536 degrees Fahrenheit (280 degrees Celsius). If it got that hot, you could not touch the motor housing without getting seriously burnt.

curled/warped Kirby fans

We see many Kirbys and the white fan is much better than the previous gray and seems better than metal.I have seen the white fan with curled/warped edges BUT only in Kirbys that filled bag with lint from new carpet and filled fill tube, emptor and fan housing and ran with friction and heat.Simple fix and even simpler to avoid.Otherwise the white fan is exellent even with some degree of abuse with grit, gravel, coins, screws, etc.

Tayyab,

You should get the Kirby G6 since it has the newer fan made of Amodel Polymers. The G4 will have a Lexan fan (unless it has been replaced) which is not as sturdy as Amodel.
