Hi, The Kitchen isn't mine but the Kirby is mine. The Kitchen belongs a friend of mine I sometimes house/dog sit for. When I go I take the Kirby with me. It cleans the hard floors better than his bagless mess

I should have added that my daily driver is a Sebo BS36 now.
Used to have a Sebo X1.1, took it back to my parents house for them to use upstairs.
They have an X4 for downstairs and a Henry for the hard floor. The Sebo isn't brilliant at edge cleaning or cat litter on hard floors.

When I grew up my parents had a Kirby Legend 2. I miss it and might end up with a Kirby sooner or later. My house mates will not be impressed. I already have the Rug Doctor and pressure washer under the stairs for winter storage as well!
I do have memories of my Dad sucking up a stone and breaking the fan in the Kirby, twice no less. How do you guys get on with hard objects vs Kirby fan?

Daily driver decisions . . .

Back in June of 1972, I just finished the third year of my high-school teaching career. My parents had divorced earlier, and I was tasked with being the head of the household. At the time, I had already developed my affinity for vacuum cleaners, and I believed the best ones for keeping a clean house were the Hoover Convertibles. I had two Convertibles I bought new, and I was really into beating and sweeping and cleaning the Hoover way. I had my pick of which one to use.

In that summer of 1972, I was in the process of buying a new house, and my younger brother was between jobs. So, he took a job with a local Kirby dealer as a demo salesman. He wanted to practice his demonstration techniques of the Kirby Classic 1CR with me, so I said okay. At the time, I was only vaguely familiar with the Kirby brand. He didn't have to go through the whole demo. I was impressed with how the machine was built and all it could do that a Hoover couldn't. The dirt meter test got my attention. I wasn't aware that he who vacuums last always wins. My brother cut deeply into his commission and gave me a great price, and bought that Kirby.

I kept my Hoovers, but that Kirby became my daily driver for a number of years until I bought my Tradition--the one with the headlight safety switch. I did use my Hoovers from time to time for quick cleanups when I didn't want to drag out the Kirby. I bought the new house, and that Kirby Classic cleaned it from top to bottom before we moved in. I used it to shampoo a carpet and polish a hardwood floor.

Fast forward to 2015. I have 11 Kirbys in my collection, a number of Hoover Convertibles, 4 of the Hoover Windtunnel self-propelled, the Platinum bagged and bagless, the anniversary models, and a few others. Add to this Miele, Sebo, Oreck, and Royal. However, Kirby is still at the top of the list as a daily driver. I've always preferred upright vacs, but I have used canisters, such as the Oreck Dutch Tech, the Hoover Windtunnel (blue with power nozzle and S bag), and a Kenmore Progressive.

Here is my daily driver decision to make:
1. Of all my Kirbys, the ones I rely on most are the Legend II (I like the style), and the Sentria. Both are very good vacs.
2. This past May, My Kirby dealer gave me a good deal on a Sentria II. It has been in the box since I bought it. I bought it new while I could get it to keep as a cushion in case I didn't like the 100th anniversary model.
3. Now that the Avalir has been revealed, should I buy the Avalir and keep the Sentria II in the box? Should I wait for the jury to come in on the Avalir and unbox the Sentria II, or should I go for the Avalir, use it and keep the Sentria II boxed???
4. Of course, if I don't want to use a Kirby on a particular day, there are other options available. The Sanitaire S661 and the Eureka Mighty Mite make a good cleaning team. Hoover Convertibles always clean well. The 719, the Decade 80, and the 4175 have been serviced and run well. The U4725 does an excellent job. The Oreck Platinum Plus is okay as a good electric broom. I like the XL21 out of all my Orecks.

Hi Ely

It's not often people use a BS36 as a regular DD.

The new style fans on the Kirbys are far more resilient than the one used on the L2.

Here is a picture from a G5 that came in to me full of....well you see what I mean. The fan is fine by the way. I wouldn't intentionally suck up large heavy object tho with any upright. Not to long ago my supplier had a new Sebo X4 pet come back a few months later after he sold it to a lady. She had sucked up a chunk of house brick and smashed the housing where the brush roll is. I think she also damaged the bag holder/door some how.

She also seem surprised the damaged wasn't covered under guarantee. I wonder why...

Thanks, James, for the compliment. It's so sad that someone would abuse a good vacuum like the G5 in your post. You might expect this from some folks who buy an "el cheapo" plastic vac that says to them, "Go ahead and beat me up and run me into the ground and throw me away and then go buy another." Many of us would expect that a high-end vacuum, no matter what the brand, should be cared for as a fine appliance in a good home. Sadly, not everyone is on the same wavelength when it comes to using a good vacuum.

HI James

I like your 517. I had heard that Older Kirbys are hard to find in the UK like here in South Africa. Do you bring some in from the USA ?

I have yet to find a 500 series Newer than a 510 I have one of and I have a few 508,s, These seemed popular and I have just received my first 505. All these models have 110v stamped on them with 220v stamped over it. Are yours the same ?

Hi,

All my Kirby 500 series are USA ones that I imported in. I do own a second Kirby 508 that is 230 volts imported from your neck of the woods quite a few years ago. The lady who owned it contacted me via my website wanting to know if I was interested in it.

We have a few re-badged Wireless Vacuette's and "230 volt" Scott Fetzer Sanitation Systems over here in the UK.

The Vacuettes were re-badged "GEM". I can't remember what the S&Fs were re-badged off the top of my head.

Someone in high up in Kirby over here was telling me he knows someone was importing Kirby's over here after the war in the south of the country but he wasn't sure who it was.

Wow, I have a few units in the USA I want to bring out but need to find a better way of bringing them to SA. Its 3 times the price of bringing a machine out from the UK.

Any how thanks for the info. Your 500's Look AMAZING

Gareth
