Crazy

We got one of those when I was a kid. And how funny that I remember the box so correctly in such detail. I loved that vac, but not $1300 worth.

It would be interesting if someone used one of those 'relative value' calculators to compare how much that one went for, with how much a consumer would have paid for it when new....

Ok, I did it - according to someone knowledgeable in these matters, in 1969, it sold new for $79.95.

The nearest year I can compare it to is 2009 - but this is what I got:

$468.00 using the Consumer Price Index
$380.00 using the GDP deflator
$485.00 using the value of consumer bundle
$486.00 using the unskilled wage
$562.00 using the Production Worker Compensation
$764.00 using the nominal GDP per capita
$1,160.00 using the relative share of GDP

They'll be even more shocked if they get the money. All too often bids that high arent honored. People get carried away with the bidding then back out.

Bidding list........

Take a look at the bid list. Interesting that the last two bidders were totally at the last minute.

I'm seriously thinking there's something up with this. We go from $430.00 to $1299.00??????

Thoughts? Am I missing something?

Its simple enough

The ebay member e***d placed a maximum bid of greater than $400 early morning Nov 27. Two other competitors tried to out bid - one dropped out at $300 and the other at $400. It looks to me that e***d's (dont you just hate ebay's policy of hiding winners namers!) max bid was $430 - being out bid by n***e, who placed a high max bid $1299.69 (madness, they should have placed it just over $1300.00), which itself was "sniped" in the closing seconds of the auction.

Clearly the bidder really wanted it - so good luck to them and good luck to the buyer if the bid is honoured.

It has often been said that an item is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it, even if "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

I certainly would never pay this much for one cleaner although I must confess that I have probably spent a lot more than this over the years. I dont keep an list of how much I spend (I suppose I should really) but it would take the total at least of my five most expensive cleaners to exceed this figure but that is my choice based partly on my income and partly how much I want it and partly how much I am prepared to pay - all my choice. But i too have been left open-mouthed at the amounts some people bid up to, not just cleaners but other things too.

Happy bidding
Al

E BAY!

Has ruined it for ordinairy working folks like me! Occasionally you can get a deal, but usually people with loads of money get it, I refuse to pay a rediculous price....even if I had that much money.

Truth hurts.

Nobody is ruining anything for anyone.
How do you all know whoever won it has big bucks. Some people believe it or not don't waste their money on a lot of stuff you might think necessary or you just gotta have and instead they save it for buying things they really want on Ebay etc. Or they put it on their credit card (foolish). Maybe the buyer doesn't have a car to spend money on making payments and insurance or house payments. Maybe they don't bother with a cellphone or hi end cable monthly bills or wasting it on stupid Xboxes and Wii and games etc. Who knows, maybe they are rich, it doesn't matter but don't jump to conclusions.
If anyone one of you wanted it that badly or you want a good shot at the next NIB old vac that comes up then you'll seriously think about SAVING that money up so you can be MR. Big Bucks next time and have everyone bitching about you. LOL

It's as simple as that really.

quote: "Nobody is ruining anything for anyone."

Is this the brave old "capitalism rules" song all over the place again?
I'd say yes and no. To both of it.
To the "nobody is ruining it" (yes it might possibly be true that someone wants it so badly, that he is spending tons of money on the vac - but why pumping it up so high for nothing?)

And also yes to the "capitalism song" (since all capitalism slogans end with "period" or "your fault" or "so be it" or "if he can, he will, wouldn't you?" or "that's facts, shut up"). I'd say no here only because we will never know, we will never have any substantial proof of this allegation. (That's why things like this can work at all).

I say: If the two top bidders kick the price up that high with no further reason, they definitely are 2 tomatoes short of a salad and indeed DO ruin things as one grand is just small pocket money to them.
Let's face it guys: From 430 to 1200something IS moron behavior.
There are so many Hoovers out there (still).
Just a wee bit of Zen-like composure or patience would have granted the veritable device to the "veritable" gentleman in just some weeks.

Or read me plain text: Greed and impatience (and/OR fraud).
I wouldn't be too surprised if that very same machine pops up again (possibly in more than 90 days, as this is the period which ebay deletes old auctions within so you can't trace the deal.)

Talking about price-boxing upwards... (or on a global scale: financial bubbles).
*shrugs*

All I know is!

It is getting harder and harder to go to yard sales estate sales and antique malls and get a deal because these folks see a Mixmaster sell for 300.00 so they think all are worth that much, so yes I do think this kind of thing is ruining it for everyone else!

Good news is:

The other thing that happens when you get these overpriced auctions is that they send out BIG $$$$ signs to Ebay sellers and viewers around the world who then try to cash in themselves while the heat is on. In no time you begin to see a flurry of similar items that perhaps they wouldn't have even bothered listing.
I know because I've done it selling stuff. Seen a particular mixer get big bucks.. Oh I have one or two of them so onto Ebay they go and I get some good money for one maybe two and then the bottom falls out because there's quite a few for sale now. That's they way she goes. Hang tough and wait and sooner or later what you're looking for comes up and goes for a reasonable price.

I'm kicking myself this week because there was a blender on Ebay I've wanted for ages and the few times they came up they always sold for close to $200 with multiple bidders.. I forgot to "watch it" and it sold for a mere $39 with one bidder.

right, Hans!

I have discovered a similar development over here: Machines that used to go for a few dozen Euros now are announced 75,- or even 200,- starting price.
(They rise like yeast in no time, being offered again 2 weeks later at 1,-)

My solution: Stick with the old prices and refuse those poker face blobs who call their relatives to bid up and up and up).
(I ban them).

Even more so: Less ebay, more yard and garage sales and goodwill shops for me! (Even if this means more traveling, so what?) A good chance for a good chat! Have won more than 1 new friend through this. ;-)
Which is more than money can buy...

Good luck to you!
J.
