So Rob's thread about his month-long trial with his new Oreck gave me an idea today....

Call me nuts........but why don't as many of us as possible use a single vacuum for 2 weeks and compare what we get out of our carpets? It'll be hard for me personally since I tend to use different vacuums all the time, but I've settled for one...

The Singer Twin-Fan. I don't know why I decided on this one, but it seems like the one to pick. Maybe because I just got it Friday....who knows. I may hate it at the end of the month, but I've got it fitted with a new F&G bag and it's ready to go.

Let's say use it until the last day of this month. On June 30, cut the bag open after you vacuum one last time and let's see what all you got!

Me too! I think I'll use the Hoover Concept II Electronic on the main floor and the Hoover Concept I upstairs. I'll let you all know!

Basis for comparison

Tristar, did you intend for us to compare our results with each other or with a different test vacuum that we own? I was thinking of using my Hoover Celebrity with the Quadraflex nozzle for two weeks and then compare it with my Sanitaire 677D after two weeks of use.

Basis for Comparison...

Sure....why not? I use a Sanitaire S670 as my daily driver, so when I'm done with the Singer, I'll make a pass with it. I'll post the results of both.

Hopefully the results won't be as inflammatory as when I did the Sanitaire vs. Kirby thread!

I've decided...

...I'll use my Vax VX1. Started today!

What are your views on Vax? Does that one have a BR? You seem to only be using it for hard floors.

Wow, Eric, do you realize what you are asking us to do? I use multiple vacuums daily... I used Dyson and Oreck yesterday and Hoover Convertible and Royal all metal the day before. It will take an extreme amount of self control to only use one machine. I guess you aren't asking us to do anything you aren't willing to do yourself LOL

That Singer you have is the kind we had when I was growing up. I took it for granted back then, but I think if I found one, I'd buy it! What kind of belts do they take?

I guess I'm in, but I want someone else to pick. Should I use my Miele Plus canister or my Dirt Devil Broom Vac upright? Those are my two faves for now and I know I have enough bags for each of them to do this experiment and still have plenty left over. So, someone pick for me... which one should I use?

Of course the results should vary greatly. We all have different conditions. I have a small 1 bedroom apartment with flat carpet and a cat... I bet someone with a 3 story houes and 2 black labs would get more dirt with a push sweeper than me with a Kirby.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results!

Ryan, of course the Vax has a brush-roll. It's designed to be used on both carpets AND hard floors, hence Vax including a brush-roll on/off switch in the design, and rollers at the front of the soleplate.

And yes, well-observed, in that video, I am cleaning laminate flooring. I'm not 'only' using it for that purpose, but for the sake of the video, I was demonstrating the performance of the Vax on laminate. This experiment is supposed to last two weeks, and today, that was my cleaning task. The Vax met it admirably.

It also happens to have one of the most effective edge-cleaning systems I've seen on almost any cleaner. And as with all the best designs, it's shockingly simple: two curved bars at each end of the soleplate, which force the end bristles out either side of the nozzle as they rotate. When the nozzle is against the carpet, they 'lash' out horizontally, grabbing any litter down at the edge of the skirting board, etc, and pulling it into the airstream.

Simple but brilliant!

Bobby...

I second the Miele recommendation. While the BroomVac is a fun cleaner (I had 3 growing up!) they're not all that effective as a sole vacuum, so the Miele would definitely be a better pick IMHO.

It's hard to do this myself because I tend to use a different vacuum every day. I tend to use my vintage Hoovers from time to time too, but none of them have bearings right now, so I can't! It's torture knowing the bearings are in the mail but not here yet...

I swear....had the bearing arrived before I got this insane idea, I'd have chosen the Hoover 28 to do my test with!
