So Rob's thread about his month-long trial with his new Oreck gave me an idea today....

Call me nuts........but why don't as many of us as possible use a single vacuum for 2 weeks and compare what we get out of our carpets? It'll be hard for me personally since I tend to use different vacuums all the time, but I've settled for one...

The Singer Twin-Fan. I don't know why I decided on this one, but it seems like the one to pick. Maybe because I just got it Friday....who knows. I may hate it at the end of the month, but I've got it fitted with a new F&G bag and it's ready to go.

Let's say use it until the last day of this month. On June 30, cut the bag open after you vacuum one last time and let's see what all you got!

Me too! I think I'll use the Hoover Concept II Electronic on the main floor and the Hoover Concept I upstairs. I'll let you all know!

Basis for comparison

Tristar, did you intend for us to compare our results with each other or with a different test vacuum that we own? I was thinking of using my Hoover Celebrity with the Quadraflex nozzle for two weeks and then compare it with my Sanitaire 677D after two weeks of use.

Basis for Comparison...

Sure....why not? I use a Sanitaire S670 as my daily driver, so when I'm done with the Singer, I'll make a pass with it. I'll post the results of both.

Hopefully the results won't be as inflammatory as when I did the Sanitaire vs. Kirby thread!

I've decided...

...I'll use my Vax VX1. Started today!

What are your views on Vax? Does that one have a BR? You seem to only be using it for hard floors.

Wow, Eric, do you realize what you are asking us to do? I use multiple vacuums daily... I used Dyson and Oreck yesterday and Hoover Convertible and Royal all metal the day before. It will take an extreme amount of self control to only use one machine. I guess you aren't asking us to do anything you aren't willing to do yourself LOL

That Singer you have is the kind we had when I was growing up. I took it for granted back then, but I think if I found one, I'd buy it! What kind of belts do they take?

I guess I'm in, but I want someone else to pick. Should I use my Miele Plus canister or my Dirt Devil Broom Vac upright? Those are my two faves for now and I know I have enough bags for each of them to do this experiment and still have plenty left over. So, someone pick for me... which one should I use?

Of course the results should vary greatly. We all have different conditions. I have a small 1 bedroom apartment with flat carpet and a cat... I bet someone with a 3 story houes and 2 black labs would get more dirt with a push sweeper than me with a Kirby.

I'm looking forward to seeing the results!

Ryan, of course the Vax has a brush-roll. It's designed to be used on both carpets AND hard floors, hence Vax including a brush-roll on/off switch in the design, and rollers at the front of the soleplate.

And yes, well-observed, in that video, I am cleaning laminate flooring. I'm not 'only' using it for that purpose, but for the sake of the video, I was demonstrating the performance of the Vax on laminate. This experiment is supposed to last two weeks, and today, that was my cleaning task. The Vax met it admirably.

It also happens to have one of the most effective edge-cleaning systems I've seen on almost any cleaner. And as with all the best designs, it's shockingly simple: two curved bars at each end of the soleplate, which force the end bristles out either side of the nozzle as they rotate. When the nozzle is against the carpet, they 'lash' out horizontally, grabbing any litter down at the edge of the skirting board, etc, and pulling it into the airstream.

Simple but brilliant!

Bobby...

I second the Miele recommendation. While the BroomVac is a fun cleaner (I had 3 growing up!) they're not all that effective as a sole vacuum, so the Miele would definitely be a better pick IMHO.

It's hard to do this myself because I tend to use a different vacuum every day. I tend to use my vintage Hoovers from time to time too, but none of them have bearings right now, so I can't! It's torture knowing the bearings are in the mail but not here yet...

I swear....had the bearing arrived before I got this insane idea, I'd have chosen the Hoover 28 to do my test with!

Hoover Bearings

I sent them off to a friend who runs a vacuum shop to be professionally regreased. I don't have anyone I know of down here who has a grease gun with the proper fittings to pump grease where they so desperately need it.

I can't find the bearing plates I need anymore either, so I soaked the old ones in solvent to get all the old YUCKY, CRUDDY grease out and sent them off to become happy once more...

Straight Suction Comparo

It would be interesting to test my Tristar CXL w/ Power Nozzle (VG I brushroll) with my Compact Electra straight suction vacuum. Maybe that's what I'll do! Using the Compact rug nozzle will provide quite the workout too!

Popped a new bag in the Miele for the test.

We had that same Vax here but it was rebadged as a Bosch first then Dirt Devil. I was kicked out of best buy for playing with their floor model! I wonder how all the vacuums had dirt in them if customers weren't supposed to play with them!

Vibragroomer, I was also wondering what would happen if we spent a while using straight suction only and then tried a brushroll vacuum at the end of the test period.

kicked out

of best buy!. I would have lost my mind. I spend more money at that damn place. I wish you would have told me sooner. I have had it out with them on more than one occassion. I was going to buy a whole new stereo system and all for the house. Were talking indoor and outdoor. I could not get anyone to help so left and went to circuit city and called them when I was done shopping and thanked them for the better buy. I did not care I was looking for ease of purchase.

i saw a perfect condition bagged version of the model "vintagehoover" showed, branded "Siemens", have regretted not getting it ever since!

I remember Now

The one Big Lots had was a Bosch,I can't remember who had the Siemens,Walmart & Best Buy had the DD and sears had the two Vax versions.I was tempted to buy one of them but they were Bagless, I dont like bagless much so I wouldn't spend that much on one.The only Bagless I spent money on was the lift-off and it was a decnt vacuum for a bagless but it still wasn't worth the 220.00 I spent.

Jack, you did a good job with that video! The machine looks much sharper in black an silver than it does in red as it was over here (the dirt devil brand anyway... the Bosch came in two colors but I forgot what they were).

I used my Miele for the first day of the test. I forgot how powerful that thing is. It was acutally hard to push with a new bag... and it made my medium pile area rug stand a full attention... something even the Hoover Concept doesn't do. I peeked in the bag with a flashlight after the first use and was amazed at the junk in it considering that I'd just used the Oreck and Dyson the day before. Maybe I should have used the Sanitaire and Kirby the day before and wouldn't have seen so much in the Miele.

I'm thinking of following up with a bagless right after I finish using the Miele on the last day of the test to see what it left behind. Either the Dyson DC14 upright or the Kenmore Iridium canister (LG made)... probably the Kenmore so I can compare canisters to canisters.

I'll bite.....

I did a video too......basically to give a scope of what I'm cleaning and how it's being done.

My videography skills suck compared to Jack's.....
