That is true about the bag. I remember the paper closed bags on my neighbor's NuTone would lose power as it fills up. I rarely seen the performance drop on a MD top emptying unit. I also really like they have multiple filtration where they help protect the motor, I've seen before how a bag got put on incorrectly on a MD yet no damage had been done inside. And with a open bag design on a MD, it's easy to retrieve an item out of there without having to tear through a closed bag and replace it. I will say though that I prefer replacing a bag on a NuTone than the open bag on a MD cause it's easier and cleaner to change. MD did eventually come out with an adapter where you can use a blue microfilter bag instead of an open bag. However that would've not worked on my old SilentMaster I used to have because it was using both intake pipes. And because those microfilter bags are paper, it'd still lose power like the NuTone bags. Not too long ago MD came out with Tru-Seal bags which I think has been a game changer. Can still enjoying the cleanliness of changing out the bag without losing as much power and can be used on both intake pipes including the utility valve. I remember MD at one point did had synthetic cloth bags that could be used on a NuTone but it appears they've since been discontinued? If I was using a NuTone CV unit that's what it should have. The AirMaster XL units really does remind me of the NuTone CV units, but if I was changing my own NuTone CV out with an MD, it doesn't make sense going for a AirMaster where I can get a SilentMaster or a ModernDay for alot cheaper. Plus I only want my unit to be strictly used as bagged only like on the CV units (not referring to the bagless Broan versions). If I had my NuTone CV unit swapped out with a direct replacement, I'd get a Vacuflo DB/Maxum as it uses a similar filter design as NuTone. CycloVac had bottom emptying units that are bagged only like NuTone but it appears they're all hybrid now which I honestly could care less about as I'm not a fan of inverted filters. Maybe it's not so bad if it's bagged but I know my biggest pet peeve with inverted filters is they blow back some dusty air out of the hose like on my Beam.

Thanks Panisonicvac for appreciating the changes we made with the TruSeal bags for MD units. We designed the neck adapter to be reverse-compatible with almost ALL our older units of ours. We still offer the open-top as you identified some of the advantages it still holds....... but the TruSeal system is SOOOOOO much cleaner to use. It used to be that the industry would refer to any unit with a bucket on the bottom as "cyclonic" but we have really worked hard to market them as "bottom-emptying" instead so that there is no confusion about still having a replaceable bag in them as most do. I understand that most of the other manufacturers who shifted to "filtered cyclonic" now sell more of these than the "cyclonic" units. This is a good thing for our industry!!!
