Call me crazy but my first Kirby will be an D50 Sanitronic

OK, I do love buffing n cleaning & things. I think I'm slowly going mad but I like the older all metal construction & yes I know its a shake out bag but the bag looked in great condition. Did I make a mistake? Arrrgh but for $25 I figured I'd try it...

What should I look out for? is the dual motor a problem?

Think the bag is correct..oval Kirby...so if its good guess its worth the price for the bag?
No attach just hose

Someone tell me it's not too bad...

i seen that one and was thinking about buying it but opted out of it, Im glad one of our members got it thought. The sanitronic is a good machine. Good choice

It's no show collectors dream with box & accessy
but it does look like it was taken care of an minimally used.

alot of soul searching myself looking for the first Kirby but its impractical w the shake out bag not very sanitary.

I missed a LegendII & a G5 with shampoo for about $100 as I wasn't sure.

It was relatively inexpensive guess about the price of a movie & popcorn these day with transport & gas...LOL

So, I got a new toy to play with...

Looks like you got a nice one! The D50 is the first 2 speed motor Kirby, also the only one with the illuminated logo on the light cover. The trim looks good, and the paper label on the belt lifter could be removed carefully and reveal a never exposed belt lifter, should be flawless. All you need to do is apply some Mother's and buff, buff, buff and you'll have a great looking machine. You can also remove the bag and wash it and let air dry. The D50 is a favorite among collectors, enjoy it!

Did a mach 10 15 min research & wasn't sure why the belt lifter looked different so thats a label

I will be washing the bag in the tub & let it air dry
though if it was cotton I wouldn;t mind applying some dryer heat to shrink the fibers a bit & tighten it up.

Guess it was cotton but they had other man made fibers in the mid 60's & if its a polyester or something you wouldn;t want to heat it.

Oooops I did it again...

Says this is for a Dual 50...does this go with my machine?

I've read the dual 50 & 80 have a unique offset safety switch therefore not all models are interchangable?

Hope it fits as whatever it is I got it.

Is that another head in the back or a buffer?
It has the paper label & some sort of manual?

I also have collected two DS50's in the last few weeks, how does the cloth bag release from the emptor housing. The manual says that there is a spring holding the cloth bag in place, I would like to remove and wash both bags but am afraid of ripping the bag!

Excellent machine for the price, Christine. See how easily the extra parts just seem to appear, when yer on a roll?

Yer gonna love it! Congratulations. They are the best thing for carpets, especially if you have wall-to-wall, as is a Hoover upright with a beater bar.

I didn't think much of Kirbys - if I thought of them at all - til I found a free Heritage II abandoned at curbside, then Pete gave me a blue Tradition. Next thing ya know I'm finding all the missing bits like the polisher and shampoo heads here and there, generous collectors are sending spare parts and now I have 4 complete Kirbys with the green Santronic 80 and the G3. I suppose now I'll have to have one of each and your's is a work of Art with the light up logo.

I like the heavy metal construction
esp the metal handle
Tradition is regal in blue though as is the Heritage 2 in gray
Was looking for a while afraid to bite the bullet.
& it just seemed it was time to see what the Kirby was about.

My need for a upright isn't critcal but I like the old frankensteins & this was the last model with the all metal stick handle.

It's not an antique as its from the 60's as I am

So hopefully it has some life left in it...though I am a few years older...

Really wanted one to come all together but for the price of the vac I just had to hold my breathe & dive in

Then at the last moment I saw the parts & at $10 I figured I give it another whirl.


So the vac cost $35 without the shipping but everyone is entilted to shipping.

$35 is not bad...

Now watch I have to spend $20 on Kirby shampoo...yikes

Just asking but can these get fitted w the mini emp & maybe even a kevlar fan so it would be a mean cleaning machine?

Yeah, they can be upgraded. For cleaning performance a good brush roll and belt are a must. The fan might be nice incase you suck up something you might not have planed to but I can't imagine a performance increase unless the current one is worn really bad. A paper bag conversion is possible but someone with more Kirby knowledge than myself should guide you on that issue.

On the subject of colors, the Tradition is great. I also like the Legend II so you might want to look at one of those.

i have a kirby i'll be getting rid of....

Hi. I have a Kriby Heritage 84 red cloth bag, an old blue box of tools. They didn't come together, but. I'm NOT a Kirby fan, I appreciate others who are, however. What can you tell me about this machine? I used an Omega years ago when I worked in a church. I hated it. Any thoughts?

The Heritage 84 was a one year model built in 1984. It was based on the Heritage I. Why they did this is unknown to me.

I think hate towards Kirbys is understandable. I find the smaller the space the more frustrating they are to use. I don't think I'd want to use an Omega in a church. Sounds like a canister would be better for that kind of job.

Hi Lux.

I tried to get into my olympia today. Got top plastic off & switch but then couldn't figure how the heck the case comes off as its all metal under the top.

Talk about built like a tank

So I cleaned up that top part had carbon dust & screwed it back together before I lost the screws or forgot where they went...

Will have to take another wack another time as I sure would like to clean the fan. It cleaned up nice though.

Belt for the Kirby is a must thanks for reminding me
Can't go wrong w a new belt.

I's order one but not sure what kind & maybe better to wait til I get it.

Anyone know if all the older etc 500 series & dual sanitronics
took the same belt?

Just thinking out loud w the conversion
that would be only if I really loved it & wanted a daily driver.
I guess I'll take it for a spin on special occassions

Should take the same belt as most 500 series and the Classic throught Legend Series.

After removing the top on the Lux Olympia you remove the 3 screws at the back that hold the cord winder in place. You then work your way through to the motor from that direction. You might need a nut driver / socket driver to remove the plastic motor cover and motor. Thats the trickiest part of the whole thing.

I have a Super J / Olympia / Silverado motor sitting around in pieces that I'm thinking about reassembling as a demonstration on how its done.

church Kirby

My church is a huge 1200 seat church. I used that Kirby Omega. Then, I persuaded the pastor to "invest" in a HOOVER Guardsman (Chrome, red 1076 type hood), plus tools. Miles and miles of carpeting (red) came to life. My first experience with this model was at the seminary (don't ask). It is one of my few "would like to haves". All of my "must haves" are here, I think. Those Kirbys are heavy and expensive. I must say that I DO appreciate those who love them.
