Bye Bye Miele S5 : (

I was at John Lewis a couple of days back visiting their electrical store and it seems that the Miele S5211 is no longer on sale. A quick look at their website confirms that and even worse, Miele's UK website only shows ONE model existing for the S5, a cool looking white S5281 Solution HEPA but at £290-00 which does include the rather handy 10 year guarantee. It's a pity that Miele UK have fowled up the specification as they have shown the model to have the "Comfort" auto rewind where it clearly doesn't in the video. (Link given taken from UK website). It does however come with different main size floor head types, thus adding to its final price.

Now, compare this to Miele U.S and they still have oodles of S5 models still available. Sometimes life just isn't fair. A plea to worldwide sellers on here - how are sales doing for the S5 in general since the S8 has come along?

In the US the S8 is the direct replacement to the S5 series. IN terms of price, The Kona which is the replacement to the Callisto is the exact same price at 899.99 but it has all of the upgraded features of the S8's. The Calima, is the replacement to the S5 Pisces and it actually DROPPED in price, even though you get the same attachments but there are more features. Really the only units the increased in price would be their flagship. You used to buy a S5 Capricorn with SEB236 at 1199.99 but now the UniQ, the new Flagship, is 1499.99. You are, of course, getting much more posh with the UniQ which most feel, makes the additional price worth it. In the US, as a dealer, we can no longer order any S5's. The one's you see listed online are all left over stock.

SInce I own an S5 and sell the new S8's I can very easily say that the S8 is lightyears ahead of its predecessor. It's really, as Miele says, "The Pinnacle of Performance and Convenience". It's exceptionally lighter, it's easier to pick up and carry thanks to the handle the pivots up, away from the floor and the electronic speed control is much easier to use then the dial. Miele definitely hit a home run with these machines so don't be sad that the S5's are going away, just be happy we replaced them with something better and not something inferior.

Thing is, though, plenty of UK "big name" franchises such as Currys are passing off the heavier S700 model which is physically a bit bigger, heavier and quite pricey only costing £10 less than the base line Miele S8. Miele should do a celebration model of the S5 before it finally disappears - it has been out since 2000!

Currys are calling the S700 "Cat and Dog" and for a bit more money the SAME bag capacity lighter S6 for the same kind of spec and £20 or so more.

Our John lewis had a black one identical to mine reduced to £159- was the last one they had at all!

That £159.99 price was the same one I saw in London at John Lewis stores on Oxford St. It was very confusing for buyers as they had sat it right next to the Miele S8 priced (then) at £159-98 as a special introductory. Talk about a quick sale.

The white Miele looks like a good deal at Argos taking into consideration that it only comes with 2 years guarantee compared to the 10 year guarantee that John Lewis are doing, hence the more expensive price. The S5 is a terrific all rounder - I will be sad to see it go. The S8 is only something like 700 grams lighter where weight is concerned, but would be a bit heavier with the AirTeq twin suction Ecoline floor head attached anyway if considering that model alone compared to the S5.

Miele's do seem very durable - just the price of bags put me off. Then again they are 4.5l according to Argos.

It depends on how you look at it. The only downside to the whole Miele ownership are the cost of the dust bags IF you consider buying them on the high street. What you get in return is a fantastic investment with oodles of optional cost tools, even bigger than the ranges offered by SEBO.

I don't buy Miele dust bags that often from shops but rather online where I make a greater saving buying in the previous IntensiveClean dust bags that are often priced cheaper. Miele and many members keep saying "oh the HyClean is better," which is justifiable if you survive on the Super Air Clean filters alone as you get those in the pack of bags free and the extra high filtration aspect of the HyClean bags are better than the previous ones.

However, none of my machines ever use the basic Super Air Clean filters unless I want to scent my home with Greenleaf scented sachets or similar. I always buy the Active Air Clean which keeps the odours away.

Years ago now on the old Hooverland Yahoo group, someone suggested that the Miele could be used with a Hoover Telios permanent dust bag. I have not been able to find that post since, but apparently the cartridge slider can be cut to fit. I'm not sure if I would like to test the theory of a permanent fabric bag in any premium vacuum cleaner unless it is purposefully made for that model.

Id soon buy the "last" Miele S5 than going for a TOL Hotpoint, but then that's me. I think after you have the ownership of a Miele, its hard to let go. They are very nice premium vacuums.

I use genuine HyClean bags in my S5 and my Mums older miele (model number escapes me)

Personally, we go through 4 bags in a year, and the filters are nowhere near end of life by that point. But for £11ish quid, for a years worth of vacuuming I don't think its bad value.

Certainly, using market stall special bags killed it once, so I don't want to do it again. I still find a film of dust around the bag chamber though, wether that says something about our dust or the bag holder being slightly broken is holding it off centre I don't know!

I've got my eye on a broken Miele being sold locally, looking for a quick profit with it after a rebuild but I'll sell it with a box of HyClean bags (with filters and a bag already fitted)

And Sebo, you are right about your last comment! I have 14 various vacs to choose from, and do regularly, but using the Miele for a good session does feel kinda special! Will be tricky to replace if it ever goes terminal bang, would probably get anothe, or try a Sebo K1 (Which I was looking to buy new until I got the Miele from freecycle!)

One of my daily drivers is my Miele S6 Ecoline. I have love/loathe affair with it because of its heavier floor head. It gets stuck if I park it in the rear position when the cable has to be untangled from it and the collar at the top for the optional tool holder to clip onto always catches the cuff of my jumpers when in use. For a 1200 watt motor, I find it noisier too than the 2000 watt motors! Maybe that's just me but I usually just require to leave the vacuum in the first three settings. The tool storer is also a bone of contention. Sometimes the tools fall off, sometimes they don't.

I'm with you on the copy bags. I ordered some a few years ago that were supposed to be like HyClean complete with red seals. I have also had copy bags before with different coloured cartridge/push in flap seals and they're really nasty. They don't seal the dirt in and the bags fill up too quickly, blocking pores and cutting the suck.

A Miele S5 is so much easier, but obviously heavier.

The K1 is a far older unit and to be honest with you, they're both neck and neck on the dust bag capacity. The ONLY thing I hate about the K1 is that it has that awful pull pull cord rewind, a feature that Bosch also copied for their smaller cylinder vacs. Fine if you have an open home where the cord isn't going to get stuck, but the slightest tug gets the cord activation pull working and before you know it you'll wonder why the machine has a sheared cord or why it looks like it has a far shorter length of cord.

However I like the K1 because of its simplicity and the K1 Komfort, Pet and models above the BOL red model has a far longer hose making it far easier to use when I just have the weight of the lightweight tubes and the hose behind me. There's lots of power too and it is clearly designed for performance than looks. You get a bit more length on the SEBO compared to Miele but you also get 7 dust bags for Miele's 4, so its a win-win situation. I've often found the K1 is great for small to medium homes. Ever so compact but a lot older in many ways.

in holland we only have the black pearl still available, The link shows all dutch models. A new pearl will cost 189 euro over here.

That's interesting - does it say "black pearl" on the body close up? The black model was the last one John Lewis dept store in the UK sold alongside the first of the new S8's when they appeared.
