Someone we all know and love recently told me he had never seen a Saniway....so here tis!!! a little history, the Vac U Way co of Toledo Ohio, was founded by a man who was a big shot with AirWay, he decided to go into the Vacuum manufacturing business big time, he already knew how to set up sales offices etc, so in 1960 he found out he could by the rights to the Kingston Canister and build it himself, the first Saniways were direct copies of the Kingston and may have been built by them, that part of the story I never got, anyway in 1964 he changed the rug tool to the one pictured here, and changed the trim, the first machines were brown, the later ones, like this were dark red, this information was from Cyrus Fox who was a AirWay branch manager in Georgia, and became the first Saniway distributor, having the whole state of North Carolina, I meant to write the names exact dates etc down, but only got to talk with Mr Fox one time before he passed away, he told me the owner of the Saniway co died in 1976,and his wife sold everything for scrap and quit, so that is what became of the Saniway.

Saniway!

Mark IV airwashing system! Looks like a Royal, but has a hinged lid, Royals had a clamp on lid until AFTER Saniway was gone from the scene., and of course the attachments were totally different.

The Next and last version...

Had a 10 foot vinyl hose, mine has a 10 foot braided hose, also the last machines had ball casters instead of flat wheels. In my opinion, these were some of the best built highest quality canisters ever built, very powerful and extremely quiet, it is a joy to use, my great Aunt had the first one I ever saw when I was 7 or 8, always loved it, and still do!

I remember admiring the red Kingston Germatron at a local hardware store when I was young. Thanks for the historical background on the links between these similar Kingston, Saniway and Royal designs.

Thanks for posting the pics and history of this great vacuum. I guess I have a later model with the ball casters. I love the design of the rug tool, probably my favorite straight suction rug tool of any of my canisters. What a shame that his family did not want to continue the legacy. So was Vac-u-Way making these for Royal, and did they buy the rights, molds, etc. to continue manufacturing this design? I'd love to find one of the Royals with the first edition power nozzle, have seen them in the Royal brochures but never in person. I have an Electro-Hygiene tank with the first edition power nozzle and I love it!

From what I have heard,

Royal and Kingston shared the basic tooling, but until the Saniway was out of the picture, Royals had clamp on lids, Kingstons and Saniways had hinged lids.

Here is ...

My pink 1963 Royal as you can see, it does not have the step on switc and the lid clamps on.

Thank you so much for posting these pictures. I have never seen that particular machine. My how times have changed...I do not see any plastic on that at all....

My guess would be that it moves a lot of air.

I got to use one at Greg's house! There were two there at the time.

Dont recall who claimed them.

Absolutely fantastic machine! Beautiful in design, and true in power.

Apparently there was a Saniway dealer about an hour from here who had some machines and parts around? I think that was the story...

Here is my Saniway 'regret' story: saw one of these at a ReStore last summer that was shiny and in beautiful shape, and I passed on it only because it didn't have any attachments. But it was only $5! What a beautiful machine!
