Jason, that is really a great vacuum, in fact it was the first brand new one I bought myself. My sister in law still has it in fact. Enjoy!!

Great vacuum. I have the same one, though the power nozzle is broken. Yours (especially the tools) looks to be be in awesome shape. You should *almost* feel guilty for stealing it at such a price!

That would be the year 1977-1978. In 1973ish, to 1977 Sears was on it's two tone green and wood grain kick, which lasted far longer than it should have.

That said, the blue series like you have was technically a 1978 model year only because in 1979 they went to the beige and wood grain look with orange bumpers.

Now that may be different in Canada, but over here and I'm sure of this I have a 1977 fall and winter catalog that features the new blue series, and a Spring and Summer 1979 book, that features the new beige series with the accents noted above. Strangely I have that machine too, and several more supplied graciously by our own Petek.

Oh yeah and another thing...

Yours is also a LATE 1978 model as yours now features the "solid state" electrical system in the powerhead, which came on late in the year. This feature BTW is signified the little blue green dot in the middle of the headlight hood. When it was lit the powerhead was tripped, in which case you would press the red button to the side of the hood.

Sears notated that feature in the late 1978 catalog F&W. In 1979 the promoted this feature heavily, with now an red dot that lit when something was awry. IT had the new electronic circuit breaker system that was apparently more reliable then their earlier styles. Solid State was very big news for Sears thru most of the early 1980's signifying that their appliances were becoming more technologically sophisticated.

All in all it was very big wording for transistorized electrical systems then in vogue.

That's all i can think of for now...

I have to agree with Greg here. If only they had made a swivel hose this would have been one fantastic machine.

I love it that is probably one of the most beautiful canisters from Kenmore. I would love to find one of these someday.

Sam

Considering the kajillions of them they sold you'd expect to find more out there but you don't. Either they were some of the first mass trashed plasti-vacs or they're still sitting in peoples basements.

Pete, I am guessing they are still in use today. The one I had I gave to my sister in law and she still is using it.

WOW What a GREAT Find

Nice Machine, The hose and attachments look brand new, they must have replaced the hose,it is so nice looking, they are no longer available now,and it's hard to find a used one. I'm on my third blue Powermate, the first one I got in 1986,it was replaced in '88 by a Heritage II, I wasn't collecting back then, A few years ago I found another one, I sold that one to another club member,I kinda regreted selling it,then the current one came along shortly after,so I guess I was meant to have one. I do see more green ones on e-bay, One Kenmore that I have never seen again is the blue upright that replaced the green Duo-Powers,My stepfather bought one new in '79 or '80.

Hey Chad......

I have a blue Sears Best Powermate that looks just like the one at the top of this post but mine is in rough condition and I am trying to find a good home for it....It does not have a circut breaker reset button on the power nozzle at all...does that mean it is a very early 1978 model??....PAT COFFEY

Pat,

How much did you want for your Kenmore? and do you have pics, I may possibly be interested in it.

Sam

Pat,

You are correct sir. It was from either LATE 1977, when the blue colored line was "formally" introduced, to "sometime" during 1978. I guess I should have made it more clear to the people who may need actual facts.

I'm going by the information that was supplied by the current Sears catalog(s) of the time. While I have no "proper" 1978 S/S or F/W catalog for 1978, I do have a 1977 Fall and Winter that introduces the blue models with NO Solid State controls, and 1979 Spring and Summer version that do make it quite conceivable that during the 1978 run, and with the pictures supplied above, surely attests that the new reset button, and Solid State mechanism was introduced formally during that year, 1978.

I do not have actual production dates, and I think no one else does either. This in mind, would "possibly" mean that you had an early series Kenmore form the 1977-1978 model run, including the non-Solid State PowerMate on your cleaner. The reset, with the Solid State" electronics was new during that period tho, as no previous green version ever had it either. Neither of my nozzles do and I have an Early nozzle, and a late one to that series. Yet clearly it was introduced at "some" point as the one found above has it.

Yet prominently featured in the advertising of the 1979 Beige models with the woodgrain and orange trim, was the new Solid State Controls on the PowerMate. This of course was after the introduction of this series that would be concurrent with the 1978-79 Fall and Winter catalog...

Enough confusion for you?

Chad

Chad, if you remember, bring a few of the great catalogs with you for us to look thru. I didn't get thru all of them in Canton last year but I sat there a long time reading.
