I found a Kirby Ultimate G with all attachments at a Garage Sale for $35.00, all it needed was a new belt and a bit of cleaning. I ended up giving it to my neighbor to replace her Regina Housekeeper which had seen many better days.

I have the Oreck XL

Gold and I also have the same carpet as you and it works perfectly on my carpet . The only time it bogs down if the AC is off and its starts to get humid . Other than that it does the best on my carpet along with the Platinum Pilot . Try cleaning the bottom if need be or just use some furniture polish or a good car wax on the base plate that sometimes helps.

I like the Oreck at Target..... I don't know how it works, but I've always thought it was an attractive model. How does it work? I feel the same about the Hoover T series bagged.... I like the looks of it, but don't know how it works.... don't like the bagless ones at all though. Congrats on some new toys, it's fun no matter what they are :o)

Dan thanks for the tip with the Gold, it did help a it to glide much better on the carpet, I may have to keep her a bit longer now. The Target Oreck is a great machine, I was initially afraid that they would cheapen it up for the big box market but they did not.

and as for the Kirby, I have a great area that I go garage sailing in with my friend. It is an upper class neighborhood with house wives who have nothing better to do than shop and sell stuff. My friend got a brand new 42" LCD tv for 200 bucks, the lady bought it for her bathroom and it was "just too big" as she told us.

Orecks

Jon, your Oreck from Target is the entry level model sold in Oreck stores, or sometimes the gray/yellow Element, for $199.99. I've even seen them as refurbs at Big Lots for $99.99. The only thing that might be different with the box store models is the brushroll. I've seen some with white bristles on the brushroll, which was a rather defective part in being very soft to begin with, and with weekly use, thinned out within a year. Oreck probably had an inventory of those brushrolls and put them on box store models. If your brushroll has the red bristles, you should be fine. It looks like you carpet might be friese. All of friese carpets are different in density and depth, and Orecks have a tendency to lock down on them. A baseplate attachment is sold to compensate for that problem, but I believe it raises it up too far to be an effective cleaner. If someone has that type of carpet, we recommend the Oreck Edge, while not my favorite machine, was produced to alleviate the problem. Also, try removing the side brushes from your Gold model, they're more gimmicky than effective, and it may push easier on your carpet. I have plush carpeting, and that remedy alone made it easier to push.

It seems that with my Oreck, the belts stretch whether the machines are being used or not. It's been my experience that medium to high pile carpets will cause an Oreck to go through belts quickly.

I have the Oreck Platinum (which is a blue version of the Gold and not a Platinum Pilot). I couldn't figure out why the brushroll would slow down randomly on different carpet types. One day just for fun, I removed the belt from my new vacuum and compared it to a brand new belt straight from the vacuum store. Both were genuine Oreck brand. The belt from my brand new machine was actually showing signs of of stretching, as it was larger than the other belt. When I replaced it with the extra belt that I purchased, the machine stopped bogging down and began to clean better.
