I have an old bee vac model 500e that I think the motor is going bad on. It started running really slow and got real hot. Can the motor be re wound if it's shorted?

To me sounds like gunked up bearings could be the issue.
50+ years of dust and gunk could be residing within the motor housing.

If it has sleeved bronze bearings, my advice would be to clean out the motor housing of any dirt/gunk and place 3 drops of Zoom Spout oil on the bearing where the motor shaft protrudes. (which can be acquired from ebay)

If its a greased bearing motor then place a few drops of penetrating oil and turn the motor shaft side to side by hand. This enables the penetrating oil to work through the bearing and loosen up any hardened or gunked up grease within the bearings.

Then take a syringe packed with automobile wheel bearing grease and squeeze the grease into the bearing until it begins to ooz out the other end. Pushing some of the old black grease out in the process. Working the grease 360 degrees through.(which can be acquired at any autoparts store. I prefer to use high temperature rated wheel bearing grease for this application.)

The motor could be rewound yes but if it is working then I don't believe its shorted. A shorted motor might hum, or vary in speed or not operate at all. Seeing that your machine does run, I just assume its old grease causing unnecessary resistance, and along with spinning a brush roll against a rug or carpet, it just adds on to the load of the motor causing it to get warm.

That's my take on it, anyone else on here is welcome to correct me.

Hope this was of some help.

Did you try running it without the belt on? Does the motor shaft not turn freely by hand? Did you check the carbon motor brushes?
If all that checks out then I'm not exactly sure what else it could be.
