OH MY GOD!
I would've died if I had seen that sooner!! I wonder who snapped it up? I imagine somebody has offered the seller a fair bit for that hence why it ended early. I remember seeing a few of these around when I was a kid, but I haven't seen one in well over 10 years or so now.

<span style="font-family: tahoma,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">I hate to be a braggart, but I'm the lucky bloke who snagged that Hitachi!  I just paid for it a few minutes ago, and sometime in the next few days it'll go on its way from the seller in Luton to my mail forwarder in Dover -- ultimately ending up here in Buffalo about a week after it arrives in Dover.</span>

Yes she did!

Turbo500: She did. I remember seeing her use it. Replaced it in 2003 I think with a DCO3 Absolute. She still has it in the garage, though she now has a compact cylinder 'cos she can't lift them any more.

Is it bad that I am incredibly annoyed that this cleaner left the UK? Call me an arsehole, but I know of a lot of UK collectors who would've killed for this. Its been well over 10 years since we've seen one if these available, its rather annoying to see it leave the country
 
I don't think it's a bad thing that the Hitachi is leaving the UK, after all, people like myself have bought imported vacuum cleaners and parts from the US, simply because I cannot get them here or are horrifically rare to the point that only those with a lot of money can buy them... :)

And I think it's also a case of "First come, First served", there was a chance to buy it, but it was missed (though I understand that you cannot buy what you don't know is there)... :)

Heck, I've seen things I wanted to buy go for ridiculously low prices, and I missed out, but I don't feel angry or upset because of that... :)
 
I'm not. I'm annoyed at the fact that such a rare British machine was snapped up without any of the UK collectors having a chance due to the listing time. I'm not even annoyed because I wanted it - I wouldn't have the room anyway. I've spoken to various collectors about this machine who would've all killed for this, but instead its gone to someone who I imagine knows very little about the machine or its history. I'm annoyed on behalf of all the UK guys who wanted this. If this was the other way around - a super rare US machine going to the UK - there would be absolute uproar.
 
I wouldn't put so much thought into it, like I said earlier, it's first come first serve, and you can't change that, I'm sure many British collectors like yourself are kicking themselves about losing it, but, that's just the way it goes, all you can do is hope to find another... :)

<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva;">I'm starting to feel sorry that I "owned up" to being the buyer!  FYI I'm aware of the fact that this is a historically significant machine -- I've been collecting vacuum cleaners since I was a youngster, and I'm in my late 40's now.  Needless to say, I've done quite a bit of research on the machines I have and/or am interested in collecting.</span>


 


<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva;">What you may not be aware of, however, is that Hitachi never - and I do mean NEVER - sold <span style="text-decoration: underline;">any</span> of their vacuums here in the USA.  For myself, I am interested in collecting rare machines that other American collectors don't have -- hence my interest in the Hitachi in the first place.  And it is also the reason that the better majority of my collection these days includes more European models than domestic (US or Canadian made) ones ... such as my Electrolux Contour Flexihead Z1501, my Electrolux Ingenio Z2570, my two Hoover Turbopowers (U2332 and U2194), my Hoover Junior Deluxe U2068, my other Hitachi upright (CV-785DC), and BOTH of my Dysons (DC07 All Floors and DC11 All Floors Telescope -- which might I add were cheaper to buy on eBay UK and import to the 'States through my mail forwarder in Dover than they would have been to buy in the High Street shops here!)</span>


 


<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva;">Might I also add that as successful as I was in winning the auction for this Hitachi, I too have had my share of disappointments!  For example, within the past week somebody beat me out of an Electrolux Excellio (that I REALLY wanted BADLY 'cause they're so darned hard to come by) on eBay UK -- outbidding me by <span style="text-decoration: underline;">one lousy pound</span>!  There was also a Moulinex Major that I wanted some time ago: that went for more than I was willing to spend as well.  And there are tonnes of other machines that I could name which have evaded me -- both on eBay UK and eBay US -- but rather than being bitter about it I've just moved on and looked for something else.</span>

<span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva;">The auction ended early because it was a Buy It Now (at </span><span><span id="v4-25" class="vi-is1-prcp"><span style="font-family: trebuchet ms,geneva;">£10) or Best Offer.  I made the seller a reasonable offer and he accepted it, so it ended when he accepted my offer.  Hope this clarifies what happened.</span>

I don't think you need to explain your reasoning behind buying the vac, nor announce you bought it until you get it or whatever, if you won the bid or they accepted your offer, then it's yours and yours only... :)

I didn't announce I was planning to buying my D80 until after I had paid for it, before I kept it a secret (only myself and one other person knew) because it's something I have wanted in a long time, yes I may have deprived an american collector of what is the Marmite of Kirbys, but, it's mine, it's rare in the UK, and I'm happy to have bought it... :)

As previously stated, I am not annoyed for me. I am annoyed on behalf of every other British collector out there who wanted this.

Yes, I am glad that this has gone to another collector, but what is going to happen the day you decide to get rid of your collection, or the day that your no longer able to collect them? Nobody in the states will want that machine because it has no significance to anybody there, so it'll end up at the dump. Sorry to be so blunt about it, but it's true. A machine as rare as that and as significant as that AND of such importance to collectors in it's home country should have stayed here. And whoever your friend in Dover is, if they know anything about vacuums, needs their head testing for allowing it to leave.

What does the fact that Hitachi never sold vacuums in the US have to do with anything? Kenmore never sold vacuums in the UK, but doesn't mean I'm going to go looking for one.

As said earlier, if this was a super rare US machine going on import to the UK, there would be absolute uproar. 1 rule for 1, 1 rule for another...I guess some things never change!
 
I think this is a case of crying over spilled milk, I'm sorry but there's absolutely no reason to fly off the handle for this, it's just a bloody vacuum cleaner!!! I don't get annoyed if I'm outbid on something rare and then complain about it in public, I just say "oh well" and get on with my life...

Sorry to be an ass about it, but it's just how I feel and I know I'm not the only one
 
Well, at the end of the day, it IS just a vacuum cleaner, regardless of make, model age and rarity, someone else has bought it so just get over it...
