Good bagged uprights currently: Kirby sentria, hoover pure power, sebos and voreworks, and a few panasonics
Past: all kirbys, hoover turbopower/turbomaster etc models &vintsge hoover uprights, and Electrolux uprights

Sebo, Miele s7's, Numatic's and Panasonic bagged uprights are all highly recomended. I would go near a new Purepower if you paid me. Kirby's are FAR too overpriced, but you can often pick em up on eBay cheaper

The Miele S7 Uprights are excellent deep carpet cleaners with good filtration and good noise suppression. Nice on-board tools and a brush-roll on/off feature to clean bare floors. Very long cable flex as well (39 feet)!

I was a fan of Hoover's Turbopower 2 and 3 series in the 1990s and kept them until 2005 roughly. When my parents borrowed my uncle's Sebo X1 Automatic, I was smitten forever. It was like an updated, better engineered version of the TP2 in my opinion.

Largely though, the UK market isn't that fresh on bagged uprights as a lot of brands who used to make them have either fallen by the wayside or just concentrate on the bagless market now to get a piece of the action. The following bagged uprights are available from a lot of franchises, online and offline sellers:

1) Miele S7 range - follows feature pattern with most of their current cylinder vacs - variable suction control, brush roll on/off function, large dust bag capacity, easy stretch hose and wand on the rear and has a swivel head. LED bag indicator and others. However the prices for the S7 are very high now and the vacuum can be physically too big for some to contend with (me especially). It does have a long cord though and made for larger homes. One other aspect I don't like about this vac is that if a clog occurs at the bottom hose, it has to be removed by two screws.

2) SEBO X series -A commercial based design for domestic use - auto sensor head, large dust bag capacity, electronic panel with 4 LEDs to indicate brush roll down/up, bag full or clog and brush roll warning, brush roll shut off when something gets clogged - however it is an old design and the brush roll doesn't have a manual switch off function. It is however far better than the Miele S7 as it doesn't have the elaborate swivel and is faster to clean UNLESS you have thick pile carpeting. Also has a long cord. Over the more elaborate Miele S7, the SEBO is a far easier machine to fix and has a brush roller that can be taken out to clean as opposed to the Miele's restrictive design. SEBO's X1, X2 are older models usually going for £70 to £100 on auction sites. The successor models are the X1.1, X4 and X5 with a bigger brush roll foot. There are two choices of brush roll as well for the home owner - Miele does not offer that option, either.

3) SEBO FELIX series - the "lower" upright vacuum with more manual operated features - uses a power nozzle head derived from their cylinder vacuums with a brush roll on/off for hard floors and a 4 height adjuster dial. Piston valve bag indicator. Great second upright to the X series though this model has a few problems with long pile carpeting that SEBO may address in the future. Long cord, 3.5 litre dust capacity, good filter system. Can convert to a large hand held body vacuum a la Vorwerk but too bulky and big in my opinion. Swivels around corners though, same brush roll option to remove for cleaning and switches off if there's a clog on the brush roller. Fairly easy to use - it isn't a lightweight upright like Oreck though and even after all these years it still surprises me how some owners can't fathom how to work it - it is very simple to operate.

Generally SEBO ownership means bags and filters are better value at cost - you get 7 bags for the price of Miele's 4 in general. 10 packs are also available dependent on model and can last up to a year and a half due to different bag capacities.

4) Hoover PUREPOWER uprights - the "middle range" priced upright vacuums, as you probably know designed to replace the TP2, 3 series. Not a good machine in my view - great suction and good performance on carpet clean up but a chore to push, poor plastics, loud motors, too much hot air, liable to break pedal releases to unlock the handle/body and average 6 to 7 metre cord length. Fails to lie flat due to raised front hose at the front, copious 4.4 metre hose at the rear that drags and droops, poor plastic filter door at the rear, continuous brush roll doesn't switch off for hard floors. Generally though a replacement, they are no way better built than the TP2's and 3's and were designed to be lighter (but really aren't that much!) with higher power. Current models no longer have the handy LED bag indicator either and no piston valves have been added as a compromise.

5) Electrolux Powerlite Uprights - white models, single drive belt driven, injection art plastic moulding feel, very cheaply built, no dust bag indicator, but they do the job intended as bagged uprights. Good handle, easy to use and reliable though the hose at the back is cheap, non-ribbed (ribbed to the eye but lacks anything) and liable to kink all the time. Not good with the hose, but as a cheap all rounder for carpet care, much better than the Hoover Purepower though to push and pull.

6) Panasonic current white and black uprights - high power, auto adjustment, simple to use and fairly well made. However they can be noisy with lots of hot air generated and the dust bag capacity is large.  However the hose isn't that well protected at the rear and it uses two drive belts. The hose at the back is short, the tools don't offer much versatility since the push on oval upholstery brush has a permanent flat down position , even when it can be turned around on the hose or the extension tube, its natural oval shape limits versatility.

7) 2013 model - Panasonic "red" optiflow MC-UG322. I bought one earlier this year - it is easy to push but has a 4 litre bag capacity, 6/7 metre cord length, auto adjustment head and reliable. Great suction power though no bag indicator and no brush roll on/off function but does have a wooden brush roll and a SINGLE drive belt. The hose on the back has been improved but the tools still remain with the daft oval dusting brush. Only problem of late I'm having with this upright is that the extension tube to the dust channel at the back has a habit of slipping out and requires to be turned to "screw and lock" it in. Average to push since it has that hinge/ratio thing going on that a lot of Panasonic uprights have due to the auto head adjustment on carpets and doesn't always maintain continuous carpet contact because of it.

8) Other bagged uprights - Argos Value - the cheap of the cheap if they are still available but don't do a bad job and you have to assemble the whole thing. ORECK dirty fan uprights are also available to buy and they're ok but liable to be expensive to run, maintain and buy in the UK if dealing direct with the company.

9) Vax VCU-02 is a similar ORECK rival - I bought one very recently and its a fantastic "carpet" upright only as it lacks a hose and other tools. It isn't very well made though but it has a massive dust bag capacity, soft bag and no bag indicator naturally. Does have a commercial long power cord, auto adjusting head and side brushes.

There are others of course like Dirt Devil UK's bagged upright and a model by Efbe-Schott (see other thread) but they aren't as available to buy off a lot of high street franchises. I'm sure I have forgotten a brand though - well, of course there is always Kirby, the most expensive brand of them all in the UK. They're pretty excellent at what they do, but I seldom see them in a lot of homes as they are brutally too big for most UK homes, though generally last a life time due to their metal build and components. Kirby are strangely not available to buy in any department store in the UK and neither are Vorwerk or Karcher's line up of bagged uprights unless you got to a specialist store.

Argos don't produce the Value Bagged Upright anymore - it's not in the catalogue or online, only in their eBay shop

The Hoover Purepowers were not bad at all, the original ones were not, anyway.
I have to disagree with Sebofan, the early Purepower models were no louder than a Turbopower 2...They just had a higher pitch but it was NOT a screamer!
The early models still used the activator and the suction was VERY strong.
I still think that the Turbopower 2/3/1000's are MUCH better in performance and design. I believe that Turbopower 2/3/1000 were the last GOOD upright that Hoover made.

Did anyone see Roger's video of the Nilfisk GU305 on his youtube channel that is bagged and an upright and Roger seems to rate it? ( don't shoot the messenger if its no good, I don't like uprights and prefer bagless lol)

There are really no good uprights in the UK?

Based on what info, vacuumorgan, the business your parents owned or your own collection?

How can you jump to such conclusions since you only appear to have Kirby uprights, some Dysons and a couple of old Hoover models?

Hi-lo, just because a vacuum isn't sold any more from a franchise shop doesn't mean it is put out to pasture just yet! Hoover's Slalom is a case in point - it is slowly trickling away from the online catalogues and high street shops and going online. Im sure the Argos Value bagged upright will be back some time, if not under Argos Value but another cheap brand name, Russell Hobbs or Bush.

.

I know there are some good older bagged uprights like the hoover turbopower and the other Old hoovers. But the new purepowers are rubbish. What I am looking for is a good bagged uprights
In the uk
I know that sebo and Miele s7 are good vacuums

I know the older vacuums are very good
But in the UK there are only a few good upright bagged in the UK but apart from
Sebo Miele and Kirby
No good bagged vacuums in the UK
(I'm not talking about vintage vacuums I'm talking about modern vacuums)

apart from Sebo Miele and Kirby

So you've gone from saying "there are no good bagged uprights in the UK" to saying "there are no good bagged uprights in the UK, apart from Sebo, Miele and Kirby"?

Therefore there are good bagged uprights in the UK.

I don't know what to say apart from a HUGE sigh!

I think Ryan is so spot on, I could kiss him :P

But I don't understand...the Turbopower 2 is nothing like a Sebo Xseries. :S and for what it is worth give me a Turbopower 2, it is quieter and doesn't have the silly computer controlled height adjustment which in my opinion is stupid and doesn't work.

I refuse to replace my "bumpy" carpet just so my vacuum will clean it properly....just ridiculous.
