I know that we try to stay with older model vacuums here, but I would like to ask anyone for their oppinion on the clarke back-pac vacuum w/power head or if you know of any other brand of commercial back-pac vacuum with a power head. I have a friend that is starting a cleaning business and asked me what I thought. I figured someone here in the forum could possibly give me a suggestion that I can pass on to him.

Thanks, Edward

I worked for a short time......

at a maintenance supply company. We sold and repaired several brands. I cannot remember the name of the back-pack machine we sold. But I liked the idea. A LOT! It was easy to clean with (you only have to worry about what? a 6"X12" floor tool banging into things)... I remember that it was easy enough to change the tools too. The whole thing was just so convenient for cleaning offices etc. Really great machine. I suppose throwing a vacuum cleaner on your back doesn't have much appeal in the home maintenance market.

I want to say it was made by or was made for Tennant (SP?) At any rate it was blue.

Some of these can be cumbersome around the house.....

Having one of these on your back can be difficult in tight spaces. Most of the brands are making a "hip style" machine that rests on the lower back and doesn't protrude as much. I know Pro Team, Euroclean, and Sandia make them. I used to have one of the Sandia Raven back pack units. It had incredible suction. Another brand to consider is the Lil' Hummer, because it is streamlined for a backpack machine and you might do better with it in the home. It also has wheels mounted on in case you want to roll it around.

I have two backpac vacuums in my collection-A ProTeam and a Royal. Both are meant for commercial rather than home use-If I ran a cleaning service for homes-would stay away from backpacks and use regular canisters instead-they are easier to use in the confines of a home. With backpacks in a home--instead of "Drag Along Tragedies"You will have "Bump into Tragedies"!I have used my backpacks-they have excellent power-both of them-but just awkward to use in the house. They were designed for larger commercial places.Usually lots of bare floors and window frames to dust.

I have an old Advance backpack that I obtained at a thrift store several years ago, for $8.00. It has a powerhead. I haven't really used it--it's just sitting in my garage. It's more of a square shape instead of the cylindrical shape. The last time I tried it it did run.
